3.0 out of 5 stars Metal Hammer (UK) magazine covermount disc, September 29, 2008
This review is from: Metal Hammer: The Great Southern Trendkill (Audio CD)

Yep, this is one of the harder samplers that I've ever scored free on a magazine covermount disc from the UK version of Metal Hammer. Named of course after the Pantera album from the 90's this was originally attached issue 169 from 2007 of the aforesaid magazine.

Anyway, as per these things there are some good and some bad, some older bands and some new ones that had a buzz, whether warranted or not. So on this 15 track disc you get stuff as varied in terms of longevity as Orange Goblin and Black Label Society through to newly minted (on record anyway) chaps like Black Stone Cherry.

Most of the tracks are fairly dense offerings, as befits the title. Many have a soupy southern tinge or at least an somewhat retro vibe like Priestess and the aforementioned ... Cherry. And all up it is perhaps not a bad compilation but given the availability of MP3 downloads, either legal or illegal, it's hard to see where the market is for this supposedly `not for resale' disc. Not a bad raft of tunes if your into somewhat dense, mostly retro/suvvern tinged hard rock/metal but there is no need to part with your hard earned for this.
