Budget NWOBHM compilation with some real gems, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Metal Minded (Audio CD)
Here's an interesting collection I ran across when I was searching for bands from the legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. The budget compilation Metal Minded was released by Prism in 1987 and includes only NWOBHM songs, primarily from Neat Records artists. Here's the track listing: 1. Raven: At the Inferno (also available on the All Systems Go-Neat Anthology anthology) 2. Steel: All Systems Go (also available on The Flame Burns On: The Best of Neat Records compilation) 3. Crucifixion: The Fox 4. Goldsmith: Give Me Your Love 5. Jaguar: Dirty Tricks (also available on Power Games: The Anthology) 6. Persian Risk: 5000 Stallions 7. Dedringer: Lucy 8. White Spirit: Watch Out (also available on the White Spirit anthology) 9. Warrior: Kansas City (also available on the Vol. 1-Neat Singles collection) 10. Hellanbach: All the Way (also available on The Big H: Hellanbach Anthology) 11. Fist: Lost and Found (also available on the Back With a Vengeance anthology) 12. Demon: Wonderland (also available on the British Standard Approved album) 13. Stormbringer: Searchin' (also available on the self-titled Stormbringer album) 14. Limelight: Whitefire 15. Dedringer: Comin' Out Fightin' As you can see, a lot of these songs are available elsewhere. But a lot of them aren't (as far as I've been able to determine). Hell, I hadn't even heard of Stormbringer and Limelight before I bought this compilation. The sound quality is pretty lousy, but this was released prior to digital remastering so that's understandable. With 15 rare NWOBHM tracks and a ridiculously low price tag (I picked it up here on Amazon for a buck plus s/h), Metal Minded really is a must-have for all NWOBHM collectors.

NWOBHM gems from the Neat vault!, June 13, 2011
This review is from: Metal Minded (Audio CD)
This NWOBHM comp is a little gem. Very strange that some obscure American company would issue such a compilation as late as 1987 when hair metal ruled the world and thrash metal was emerging from the underground while the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal was a distant memory. NWOBHM connoisseurs will recognize most of these titles from the legendary '60 Minutes Plus' cassette (or 'All Hell Let Loose' if you own the vinyl version) on Neat Records although several tracks from the original release - namely AXIS - 'Flame Burns On', VENOM - 'Bursting Out', SABRE - 'Cry to the Wind', and ALIEN - 'Absolute Zero' - were dropped in favor of album cuts by DEMON ('Wonderland'), LIMELIGHT ('Whitefire'), DEDRINGER ('Comin' Out Fighting'), and the true oddball here, Swiss Deep Purple worshipers STORMBRINGER ('Searchin''). Which is a little bit of a bummer as it would've been neat (no pun intended) to preserve the original 'All Hell Let Loose' track listing. On the other hand, the real highlights from the original cass/vinyl release are all here: PERSIAN RISK - '50.000 Stallions' is a scorcher and features none other than Phil Campbell of Motorhead on guitar as well as Carl Sentance (Geezer Butler Band, Krokus, etc.) who has to be one of the Top 5 vocalists of the era. Great stuff! Another particular fave of mine is GOLDSMITH - 'Give Me Your Love' although not quite as strong as their amazing 'Life Is Killing Me' 7". JAGUAR - 'Dirty Tricks' is a another standout - not as wild and energetic as 'Axe Crazy' but very cool nonetheless. WHITE SPIRIT - 'Watch Out' is one of 5 tracks exclusive (at least back then) to this comp - musically more like heavy Foreigner meets Purple than NWOBHM but definitely rockin'; this is also the recording debut of vocalist Brian Howe who would go on to considerate fame and fortune with Ted Nugent (on 'Penetrator') and then Bad Company. The rest of cuts are all solid to excellent - RAVEN ('Live At the Inferno') always deliver and HELLANBACH's British take on early Van Halen, as they do here with 'All Systems Go', has always worked for me. FIST's brooding 'Lost and Found' is a truly epic piece of British Steel with some piercing vocals, and DEDRINGER's comp exclusive, 'Lucy', is on par or better than any of their other stuff. All in all this is a worthy purchase even though there are now several other compilations based on the old Neat catalog where you'll find most if not all of these cuts. If nothing else, this is a piece of metal history because this is very likely THE first ever NWOBHM comp issued on CD.

A Mixed Bag, February 17, 2011
This review is from: Metal Minded (Audio CD)
This is interesting for the amount of rare tracks on it and that I paid under 50 cents for it. There are only 5 worthwhile tracks (*), but like I said the rare tracks abound. As far as I can tell these are the sources: *1. Raven: At the Inferno (Wiped Out 1982- Neat 1004) *2. Steel: All Systems Go (Rock Out 7" 1981- Neat 14) *3. Crucifixion: The Fox (7" 1980- Mirimar) 4. Goldsmith: Give Me Your Love (demo 1982) 5. Jaguar: Dirty Tricks ('60 Min. +' compilation 1983- NeatC 2001) 6. Persian Risk: 5000 Stallions (unreleased) 7. Dedringer: Lucy (unreleased) 8. White Spirit: Watch Out (White Spirit 1980- MCA) *9. Warrior: Kansas City (Dead When It Comes To Love 7" 1982- Neat 20) 10. Hellanbach: All the Way (Now Hear This 12" 1982- Neat 1006) 11. Fist: Lost and Found (Back With A Vengeance 12" 1982- Neat 1003) 12. Demon: Wonderland (British Standard Approved 12" 1985- Clay) *13. Stormbringer: Searchin' (Black Demo 1985) 14. Limelight: Whitefire (Vivre Pour Survivre aka Le Diamant soundtrack 1984) 15. Dedringer: Comin' Out Fightin' (Second Arising 1983- Neat 1009)
