4.0 out of 5 stars Metal Slug - the Run 'n' Gun that's second to none!
The Metal Slug anthology is a great addition to your PSP library. 10 years after these Neo-Geo games had their arcade runs, they're now available to own on one PSP disc!

2.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating load times
I'm a huge fan of the metal slug series and hadn't until getting this been able to play both 5 and 6. The first thing I noticed is the INCREDIBLY long load times - we're talking at least 60 seconds from XMB to menu screen here. Once in the menu screen, expect another 40+ second load to get into character select for each game. Performance is adequate and playable, but...

4.0 out of 5 stars Metal Slug - the Run 'n' Gun that's second to none!, July 27, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Slug Anthology (Video Game)
The Metal Slug anthology is a great addition to your PSP library. 10 years after these Neo-Geo games had their arcade runs, they're now available to own on one PSP disc!

The gameplay is simplistic - just run and shoot everything and everyone that gets in your way. There's no complex backstory to follow, but with games like this, there's no need: just choose your character and let the shooting begin!

This anthology comes with the following games:

Metal Slug
Metal Slug 2
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
Metal Slug 4
Metal Slug 5
Metal Slug 6

Now the best part of any game is the replay value, right? Well, there's plenty of unlockables in this compilation designed to keep you coming back even after you conquer each of the seven Metal Slug games.

When you complete a Metal Slug game, you get a reward:

Completing a game on easy gives you 3 tokens.
Completing a game on normal gives you 4 tokens.
Completing a game on hard gives you 5 tokens.

With these tokens, you can unlock content to download right to your PSP and transfer to your Playstation 3 or your PC!

Unlockable content includes:

(1) Metal Slug Wallpapers & Desktop Themes
(2) Metal Slug Art Galleries
(3) Music from the Metal Slug series
(4) An interview with the Metal Slug original development team!

+ Pros:

+ 7 games at a very reasonable price.
+ High replay value.
+ Saveable progress within EACH Metal Slug game.
+ Allows selection of infinite continues for novice players.
+ Ad Hoc mode allows dual player games by connecting PSP's wirelessly.

- Cons:

- Load times diminish battery life.
- Unable to start another game at the "Game Over" screen.
- Lag times when too many characters are on-screen.

The Metal Slug anthology is perfect for those business trips or road trips - you deserve some good old-fashioned fun on your PSP.

Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sluggin It Out, July 3, 2007

I had always enjoyed playing this game in the arcades while I was growing up. I never knew that I could one day have all six games in the palm of my hand. All the games are screen for screen duplicates of their arcade big brothers. I'm very happy with my purchase of this game.

This is a great compilation of the Metal Slug series. This is a great port. I think the PSP version is perfect. This is a great game to pick up and play for a while, and finish later. It's great if you have 5 minutes to kill, or 2 hours. If you like the Metal Slug games at all, you will appreciate this compilation. Most of the games are all the same, but have enough variation to feel different from each other. The only negative I can think of is the loading times. They aren't especially long, but they happen between EVERY scene in the same level. Plus at the character select screen it takes a good 3-4 seconds each time you cursor over a different character... The loading times aren't in critical spots in the gameplay, but they do get long sometimes, and get annoying when they happen every few minutes. I would still recommend this compilation highly to anyone that likes action games, or a fan of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW Metal Slug is the best!! More arcade ports PLEASE!!, April 2, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Slug Anthology (Video Game)
When I first heard about Metal Slug Anthology it was being released for the PS2 and I was a little excited but when I read the reviews for the PSP I was exctatic. This game (or games) was made for the handheld universe. It's pickup and play friendly, you can save anywhere in the game and you can set the game to give you unlimited continues. If you've never played a Metal Slug game just think Contra with its graphics and sound on steriods. The gameplay varries enough from sequel to sequel so you don't get that "didn't I play this level in the last game" feeling. On the downside some of the games (mainly Metal Slug 2) suffer from slowdown problems but these were simply inherited from it's arcade machine big brother (Metal Slug X is really just Metal Slug 2, with the slowdown fixed). The only other issue is load times, something that seems to plauge every PSP title.

Few games are as easy or fun to pick up and play as Metal Slug. And with six varieties on a single disc, this will easily become one of the most played titles in your collection.

The game was really fun. The loading part is annoying, but I guess thats what you get for a direct port. Plays just like the arcade game (slowness when too many enemies on the screen, etc).

This is a fun game, the load times are not as bad as people make it out to be. The only complaint I have is when it starts to lag when you have too many objects on the screen. I mean seriously, this is an arcade game that takes about the same computing power to run a basic cellphone. There should be no lag. Other than that the unlockable game content is nice for replay value. ARRRGH!

Do you like to run in video games?
Do you like to gun in video games?
Do you like to run and gun in video games?
Then have I found a game for you!
Metal Slug has been around for some time. With 6 different arcade cabinets, a GBA release, two Neo*Geo Pocket games, a Nintendo DS game, and two PSP games (this is one of them, of course), it's safe to say that this is a well established franchise. There's a story in there, involving megalomaniacs, soldiers, aliens, aliens attacking other aliens, prisoners of war, and tanks. But it's all pointless. All you need to know is this: Your enemy stands before you (and behind, above, and even below)! Destroy them! G.I.JOE says that knowing is half the battle. Well, the other half is violence, and that's what this game focuses on!
I say game, but it's a compilation of seven (that's right, 7) Metal Slug games. You get one through six, and the remake of Metal Slug 2, AKA: Metal Slug X. All have great responsive controls, all make you wish that your thumb could mash the shoot button faster, all make you giggle with glee as you blow up enemies, fight aliens, and get fat from picking up too many extra point items. It's like Contra, but with a sense of humor.
It's great to pick up and play. Although initial load times are kind of long, once you're actually in the game, it doesn't take too long. In fact, I welcomed the load times, because I could give my hand a rest. Sure, I could use aut-fire, but wheres the challenge in that?
Bottom line is this: This has seven excellent run and gun games in the vein of Contra. It's cheap. If all you want to do is destroy everything that is not you onscreen, then, for the love of God, purchase this game!

Metel slug is a work of art in and of itself.
The senery is breathtaking at least to me.
It is perhaps to busy sometimes though,
And it gets choppy. They seem to master
And eliminate the choppyness by metal
Slug 4 so their has been an ongoing
Improvement in combating the technical
Issues. It is the kind of game you play
If you need to blow off steam without
Commiting mass genocide due to
Having a bad day. A final note, the
Entertainment software rating board
Gave this game a tame rating considering
It makes Wolfenstein seem like a walk in park.
