5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good (I am understating), October 15, 2001

Oh, man, this cd is GREAT!! I bought this cd when I wasnt such a big dnb hed, which was about 4 years ago, AND I STILL LOVE IT!!! It goes through so many stylez of DnB and is part time really nice and neat (with the fitting harbeatz naturally) but then on other times you will listen to tracks that will beat you and tell you "I AM HARDCORE" and all you will do is just stare and nod with youre head! The best tracks on this cd are (in my oppinion) the last four tracks on CD2. THOSE TRACKS ARE SOME OF THE DARKEST, MOST EVIL AND FASTEST TRACKS I HAVE HEARD (and I have been into dnb for quite a while now)!! I love it! Those are some of the finest tracks out there!
Are you new to DnB and want to explore what this genre has to offer? GET THIS CD! Are you a DnB Hed just like I am and are looking for a good compilation? GET THIS CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars All-Star crew of sound pioneers provide the spectrum of DnB, May 28, 2003

This double disc set is probably the only DnB CD you need for a very long time. I've had this for about six years now and I'm still picking it up for a spin at least once in a month. The line-up is sharp, the sounds are cutting edge, even in todays scene and the sheer quality of these tracks leaves you mouth open and utterly satisfied.
Peshay's Nocturnal must be one of the darkest and most powerful DnB tunes ever. Photek always delivers. Scotty gives out his repertoire of sniper shooting snares and beautiful, yet grim soundscapes and all the others prove to be on top of the movement as well. This CD is almost solely responsible for me being such a DnB-head ever since I got it. This is DnB at it's darkest, tightest and finest.
Thank god for the Metalheadz.

5.0 out of 5 stars class: sick, March 30, 2005

The year was 1996 and drum and bass was just beginning to gain recognition worldwide. Producers at the forefront of the genre were entangled in an exciting adventure, creating a new sound. Not satisfied with heavy basslines or kickin' breaks, many of the pioneering producers embraced soul, funk, jazz, reggae, and even classical to enrich this new sound.

And then we have the first series of Platinum Breakz. The producer of the groundbreaking "Timeless" album alongside some of the best producers serving up soulful slices of drum and bass with a new hard edge. Beats never sounded this good. Though such innovative days were shortlived, they have been encapsuled in time on this special double disc. The sound of the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great DnB album!, March 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Platinum Breaks (Audio CD)
This is actually one of my favorite DnB albums out there. All the metalheadz guys (Doc Scott and Peshay especially) rule on this album! With songs like Unofficial Ghost, the rhythm and style is constantly changing, which I really like. They do an expert job at creating an excellent drum n bass album. It is pricey, I'll admit, and I probably wouldn't have it if it weren't for my brother who got it for me for my birthday.

I seriously under estimated the power of this compilation cd. I'm a pretty big drum 'n' bass fan myself, but I bought this cd for a friend of mine as a gift since he shows a bit of interest in the genre. So happens I'm hearing this cd allot more than he is! I'am madly in love with the extreme diversity each artist portrays! I already have #2 and that cd wasn't too bad. It was very dark and experimental and the artists where very focused on what they were doing. But this cd is bright, colorful, over-poweringly stunning, aggresive and also adds a tinge of dark, stark, coldness. Every song has its own different personality. ranging from Dillinjas slam-a-delic "Aromerd D", The abstract, stark, futurism of J-majiks "final approach", the coldness of rufige-kru's "dark metal"........wow.......URBAN COMBAT AT ITS BEST!!

Recently a question was posted on a popular rave/music message board for people to list their favorite and most influential electronica CD of all time. There was a lot of Kraftwork, Sasha, etc. but I was amazed to see this CD listed time and time again by people given the fact DnB is not as popular in the US as it is in the UK or Germany. I have owned this CD for over 9 years now and it never gets old. This is simply a must have for anyone into any kind of electronic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who's into D&B this is a necessity!!!, September 21, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I myself have had this double cd for 5 years now and while I don't find it especially dark it is VERY smooth, sophisticated, intelligent as all heck, and is pretty much 96' at it's absolute finest. This stuff was made back in the days of gods and legends by the gods and legends themselves when they were still just emerging into the scene. This is a cd that will be immortally seen as THE main cd to have in a D&B collection just because of the sheer quality, feel, the point in these guy's careers when it came out, and of course overwhelming nostalgia it has. You could compare it to having a Micky Mantle rookie card if your a baseball fan. Quite literally the bible of dnb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Goldie's Metalheadz D&B label, January 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Metalheadz Presents Platinum Breakz (Audio CD)
Drum & Bass music brought me back into the world of techno. Its near-random time structures, improvised skitter-beats, and menacing tones sound refreshing after the predictability of trance and house, especially as a fan of free jazz and experimental. However, every genre eventually becomes stale. Today drum and bass can be heard in the background of TV commercials and major label record execs are throwing together trash projects to get a slice of the growing D&B market. Luckily, the classics of the genre will survive. This is one of them. Goldie, Dillinja, Doc Scott, Photek, Peshay, and others invented the genre. This set packs 19 Metalheadz classics onto 2 discs. Standouts include Dillinja's 'The Angels Fell', Lemon D's 'This is Los Angeles', Source Direct's 'A Made Up Sound', and Digital's 'Down Under'. Keep in mind that Goldie likes to marry D&B to house styles, and thus, diva vocals are often part of the mix. Even with the diva sound, these cuts are devastatingly dark and urbanly decadent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and powerful..., April 7, 2001
By
Jack Dempsey (South Miami Beach, Florida) - See all my reviews

As I sit here and type this review, the voice of Tom Brokaw can be heard speaking about the ill aspects of Los Angeles (i.e., Lemon D.'s "This is Los Angeles"), and it makes me feel somewhat cold.

This is a dark cd. It is, as the editorial above describes, late night, angst-ridden, cathartic music. It will awaken the demons within you, but will do little to hold them at bay. Instead, it brings them to the surface and makes you feel somewhat uneasy about it.

In short, this cd is awesome. I had purchased volume two of this series first. I'm not sure, but I think this one is better. It's hard to say because they are both so incredible. If possible, as a whole they are darker than Goldie's "Timeless" release.

Perfect for playing late at night, prowling the streets...preferably in the pouring rain....and, preferably after the armageddon....while you are wearing all black...and a big hooded jacket....semi-automatic weapons optional....

Get this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will take you Far Away, October 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Metalheadz Presents Platinum Breakz (Audio CD)
By far, one of THE BEST drum 'n bass compilations around, EVER. The basslines and the snatches of vocals here and there make every cell in your body vibrate. The second compilation is much darker, but it's merely an evolution of the sound of d 'n b, which I wasn't able to accept until more recently -- it was so different from the first compilation that I sent it back. But I'm going to buy it all over again now that Ed Rush is one of my new gods! This is a must buy if you call yourself a true d 'n b head.
