4.0 out of 5 stars The power metal brigade's first assault, October 23, 2010
This review is from: Metalizer (Audio CD)
Recorded in 2002 but not released until 2007, Metalizer is the debut album from Swedish power metal soldiers Sabaton. The military-obsessed band (are they the Bolt Thrower of power metal?) has taken the power metal world by storm in the last few years, and this is where they launched their first attack.

What sets Sabaton apart from the very crowded power metal pack is their incredible energy and of course their focus on military themes rather than the traditional genre clichés like magic swords, dragons and elves. Metalizer is a great example of that, as it often seems like the soundtrack to an epic military campaign. It has the typical power metal focus on melody and soaring vocals, but the rhythms are just thundering (like troops marching) and vocalist Broden often delivers the verses in a sharp style as though he's barking orders. It's fun stuff, and a welcome departure from the power metal formula. Besides, the two versions of the killer anthem "Masters of the World" make it a worthwhile purchase!

It's not quite as polished as later Sabaton albums (the production is pretty rough), but Metalizer has the same amazing Sabaton energy, and it's an album that every Sabaton fan should own. I'd also recommend it to any power metal fan looking for a break from the same tired "dungeons and dragons" routine.

Edition Notes: Black Lodge's release of Metalizer includes detailed liner notes, a cover of Judas Priest's classic "Jawbreaker" and a second disc that collects all of the Sabaton demos from the Fist for Fight compilation. I hate that we had to wait five years to finally hear this album, but I must say this deluxe release is an impressive way to finally present it to the metal world.
