Book Description

April 1, 2009

Rare and exclusive photographs fill the pages of this visual history of Metallica’s debut shows in San Francisco. Influenced musically by the new breed of British metal, yet epitomizing the punk rock scene, the band's loud, snotty, and dismissive attitude is evident everywhere in these photographs that document six of the legendary band's earliest performances. Tracing the band's growth, there are shots of Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney playing together, Cliff Burton's introductory gig with the band at The Stone, the last Metallica show with Dave Mustaine, and Kirk Hammett's Metallica debut. Behind the camera is the book's author, who was invited behind the scenes to hang out and photograph the band’s brazen energy in concert, as well as their crazy and unpredictable backstage antics. Shot without the safety of a photo pit, many of the photographs are close-ups of wild crowds as they head-bang fearlessly to the music of their local heroes. Perfect for browsing, the collection is interesting in its contribution to music history, for its intriguing photography, and as a documentary on the youth culture in the Bay area during the 1980s.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Fans of Metallica will love this intimate look at the band, from more than two decades back. Bill Hale takes us on that journey, offering a massive dose of heavy metal mania."  —Shelf Life

"All I can say is wow. The holy grail of Metallica's early era in photography. This is one awesome book along with the text that goes with each photo. Any Metallica fan from any era has got to check this book out."  —Good Time Metal Oldies Blog

"Hale captures the edgy essence of the young band . . . If you are a serious Metallica fan or just a purveyor of rock history, this book is a must-see."  —Sacramento Book Review

"One of those few books that are more than developed film on paper, but a time machine in book form . . . Bill Hale is to Metallica as Astrid Kirchherr was to the Beatles."  antiMusic.com

"Hale’s shots—damn, he was just a kid too—are top-shelf, crisp, clear, colorful, and kinetic. Some remind me of Ross Halfin. He had full access backstage and wasn’t afraid to wade into the pit to get crucial shots from the front. He has a good eye for the pose, and his fan’s eye view allows him to capture shots that more experienced and blasé snappers might pass up . . . A slim volume but very much worth it for all serious students of metal."  —Ink 19

"This happens to be the earliest account of photos to surface on this band’s early period . . . this book is a must have for the true Metallica fan."  —Big Wheel Magazine

More About the Author

Bill Hale started photographing Rock and Roll Bands in 1979 @ the age of 18.
In the 1980's, Bill was the Chief Photographer for Metal Rendezvous Int. Heavy Rock - Metal Magazine.

While on staff he was able to shoot many of the top bands of the day including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Riot and UFO. Bill was fortunate enough to photograph many legends before they transcended to "Rock and Roll Heaven), Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy), Bon Scott (AC/DC), Freddie Mercury (Queen) and Rory Gallagher are on that list.

"MRV" gave 1st press to some of the biggest metal and Hard rock bands of the day. Anthrax, W.A.S.P., L.A. Guns and Armored Saint, the list goes on... Bill worked exclusively with MRV, yet, his work appeared in such Metal Magazines like Kerrang (UK), Enfer (France) and Metal Mania (San Francisco).

Bill now lives in Hawaii and still works with Rock and Rollers. His client list contains some of the state's most loved and legendary stars such as C&K, up and coming Guitar virtuoso Makana and the Hawaiian Super Star Henry Kapono!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For All Hard Core Metallica and MegaDave Fans!, March 26, 2009
By
This review is from: Metallica: Club Dayz 1982-1984 (Paperback)
Bill Hale does it again in this cohesive and exclusive collection of photos documenting Metallica's rise towards their legendary metal czar status while cutting their teeth in the club circuit. For those like myself who didn't get to be there, this is as close as we'll get.

Megadeth fans should obviously pick this up as well, as there is a huge dose of Dave throughout this incredible photo compilation.

I look forward to seeing more of Bill Hale's work.

5 STARS!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Metallica: Club Dayz 1982-1984 (Paperback)
Kudos to Bill Hale for a back stage look at one of the greatest bands. Its igreat to see them as not the huge rock stars they are, but as young kids trying to make it and have fun doing it. I can only hope more books like this come out from other great bands in rock. A must for any Metallica fan. How about a sequel with Megadeth?

5.0 out of 5 stars I Bought This Book..., August 28, 2009
This review is from: Metallica: Club Dayz 1982-1984 (Paperback)
...for the same reason I don't "read" Playboy. I admit it: I am a voyeur. Bill Hale must be one too because he takes an awful lot of pictures. Metallica (at least in the days that most die-hard fans I know lament) must have approved of "voyeurism" because they didn't seem to mind being looked at. In fact, the unique relationship they exhibited with their one-man, personal Paparazzi is what sets this collection apart from any other, aside from the rarity of the subject matter.
I don't own a coffee table, but when the hard-bound version gets released, this may be the impetus I need to justify going out and buying one to accommodate my many voyeuristic friends.
Aloha.
