Season 3 of Metalocalypse picks up directly after the violent attack on Mordhaus leaving the band in a precarious position without management. How will the biggest entertainment act in the universe deal with the BRUTALITY of a troubled music industry, declining economy, and their own unbridled narcissism? How will the band deal with getting too big and losing touch with their roots? By joining their own tribute band?]]>

This season isn't as good as the first two, it's also pretty different, although it's still brilliant at points, especially the Hamburger Time episode. Season three seems to focus a lot more on character development, which I support and very much enjoyed. Each character has their own episode, with their own songs, even Dr.Rockzo. My favourite episode was Rehabklok and made me love Pickles even more.
The season finale was amazing, nice to see some actual plot, although the cliffhanger is going to make waiting for the next season a bitch.
The special features are also really good and fun to watch.
The uncensored swearing takes a while to get used to and in a way, I prefer the guitar riffs but eh, it's not bad, I'll probably get used to it.
One thing, my copy had a rather large rip in it. This could be because I imported it to the UK but I'm quite annoyed at that...
Am I one of the few that loves this season the most?
While I miss the guitar riffs that played during each use of profane language, I didn't really care either way that it wasn't included in the new season. It's not essential to the plot or anything. I did notice that certain male body parts weren't censored, which the first time watching the episode I gave an 'OMG!' gasp but it's not anything thats going to ruin the show.
I noticed that this season spent more time with character side stories. The other two seasons focused on Dethklok as a group, but season three explained why Toki likes Dr. Rockso so much, or why Skwissgar whips out his guitar and fast plays when he's uncomfortable, why Pickles drinks so much, etc etc. You really start to understand each of their little idiosyncrasies and love them just a little bit more. I must admit I absolutely hated the Dr. Rockso episodes from seasons 1&2, but I find that I like him now, he seems a wee bit less annoying [or maybe he's still annoying but now he's funnier?].
You also find out the fate of Charles [the manager], and when you find out what happened to him, it really sets the plot for future seasons, and BOY I can't wait!!
There are fewer episodes in this season, but the episodes are also twice as long. The curses are no longer bleeped by that awesome guitar squeeling, but there's also a great deal more cursing in this season; so I imagine that much bleeping would have just become annoying. And it's surprisingly refreshing to not have any edited language this time around. Lastly, while the storylines are as amazingly well-written as ever, the majority of the episodes don't contain new tracks or concerts. You'll notice there's plenty of musical material however, but the focus does seem to be much heavier on the story side of things within season 3.
The core of the show you undoubtedly adored in seasons 1 and 2 is still very much intact. Metalocalypse is still clever, brutal, and hilarious; the way that it's always been. Some reviewers have insisted that the show took a completely different direction; leading me to believe that the band was undergoing changes to its lineup or that Ofdensen was really gone for good, in an attempt to keep the scripts fresh. But again, there's nothing like that here. This is still Metalocalypse.
The only real reason I'm giving this season a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the fact that so many of the more comedy-laden tracks were incorporated here, while the metal tracks weren't given equal showcasing. Still, aside from that, season 3 was fantastic! Just like with the first two seasons, once I turned the first episode on, I didn't sleep until I'd finished them all. Highly recommended.
For reference two of my favorite episodes are the Season 1 finale and the Season 2 opener. Seems like they peaked at the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2. Here's hoping they'll turn things around for season 4!!!!
