Ovids sensuous and witty poem, first published in a.d. 8, brings together a dazzling array of mythological tales from Greece and Rome, ingeniously linked by the motif of transformation from one form into another.

Splendid poetry, mediocre reading,
By Joel (Watertown, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Metamorphoses (CD-ROM)
The poetry is beautiful and I wanted so much to like the reading. Perhaps I'm too much of an Anglophile, but I found this reader's voice too harsh and the reading too unpoetic; the voice got in my way in understanding the text.
In recent years recorded books have attracted many truly gifted actors to interpret the text. Unfortunately, this recording reminded me of the old days, when "books for the blind" (which is how it all started) had little artistic merit but at least were a beginning... I want a British-trained actor, like Derek Jacoby, to read these heroic poems. I can't recommend the current recording. Unfortunately it's the only one on the market.
