4.0 out of 5 stars Glad I stuck with it, November 22, 2010
This review is from: Metamucil Clear and Natural Powder 57 Dose, 11.7-Ounce (Health and Beauty)
I almost stopped using this product after a few days. I'm glad I kept using it.

I already eat a relatively high fiber diet, about 35 grams a day through green leafy vegetables, legumes, etc. However, I wanted to add a few more grams of *soluable* fiber to my diet because of the positive health benefits. Many of the other types of fiber supplements contain ingredients that I don't like. Regular Metamucil uses psyllium husks that always make me feel like I'm swallowing sand paper. Benefiber apparently uses wheat dextrin.

Metamucil Clear & Natural uses inulin and is mostly soluable fiber. Inulin is derived from chicory roots. Chicory root is often used as a coffee substitute.

So I started to use the Metamucil Clear & Natural. In warm water, it mixed up very nice with no residue. I could not detect any taste, and it had the mouth feel of drinking a Snapple (just slightly thicker than water but very pleasant).

I started with 5 grams (one teaspoon) for a few days. On the second day, I had some bloating. On the third day, the bloating was pronounced and I also had uncomfortable constipation (sorry, but you need to know, and if you're reading this I figure you can handle it). I'm glad I continued, because after about four - five days, this stuff really works. I use 10 grams a day now (one teaspoon, twice a day), and this stuff is great. No more bloating, and everything else is great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars No taste, no texture, no color - perfect fiber supplement, August 21, 2008
As I am on a low carb diet, I am always looking for ways to increase my daily fiber intake. Studies show that ingesting 25-30 mg of fiber daily will decrease gastrointestinal disorders and the possibility of colon cancers. I had heard the FiberSure powder mixes in clear, has no adverse taste, and comes with a reasonable price tag.

I didn't want to use Metamucil, which apparently has an orange flavor (and I suspect might be gritty). And as I checked the fiber powder options on the shelves at Rite Aid, it seemed that most products were much more expensive than this one. A friend had recommended FiberSure so I wanted to give it a try.

At this point I've been using this for several weeks and have found the product is everything I was seeking. I can add a teaspoon to just about anything - there is no taste or texture change. I've added this with good results to coffee, red and white wine, salad dressing, eggs, oatmeal, soup, Crystal Light drink mix and yogurt. The package said you can add it to baking products, but I have not tried that myself.

The product offers 5 grams of soluble fiber per heaping teaspoon of product. It's gluten-free, contains no net carbs and is made from vegetable products.

I was impressed that the container has an ergonomic feel in the hand and is easy to pour. I usually don't bother to measure it out in a spoon - I guesstimate out a teaspoons' worth and it seems to work fine.

I noticed that I had to increase my fiber dose slowly, which by the way *is* recommended on the label. I actually did notice a difference in my GI tract shortly after starting to take the product. Nothing uncomfortable, but a definite change in the bowels. I do recommend either gradually increasing the fiber dosage over a week or two, or increasing your hydration when you do take the supplement. Either way, this helps everything even out.

Very recommended for anyone interested in easily adding fiber to their diet. This is a super easy way to eat better and be proactive about your health.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than taking a ton of pills, February 19, 2010
I started taking fiber pills and found that it was a pain to have to be taking so many pills to not even get the results I was wanting. I decided to try this powder instead. The first time I poured a spoonful into my drink I noticed it clumped up at the bottom of the drink. Not something you want to see. After that though I stirred it longer and a little faster, never clumps anymore. I mix it in my juice and notice no taste or grit. It's been working great for me so far so that's all that matters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to add fiber to the diet., December 18, 2008
I got this because I wanted to add fiber to the family's diet. I started mixing it in everthing I made that was wet. No one could tell it was there.

It's not gritty like Metamucil and doesn't stick to the glass like Metamucil. It's also flavorless, unlike Metamucil.

The bottle says not to mix it with fizzy things like soda. I'm guessing it flattens it out, but i haven't tried it. I did try it with a dressing made with mayonaise and the mayo seemed to get more runny so it did not come out quite as good.

I usually have it in my Crystal Light. It's pretty good that way, mostly because I can't tell it's there.

I don't really want it in water, though I've done that. It might be psychological, but I don't like the thought of having this tasteless stuff in water, so I down it quickly. Honestly, I don't taste it, but I don't want anything in my water unless it flavors it, like Metamucil does.

One thing I'd like them to improve is the design of the opening of the container. It would be nice if I could fit a spoon in it to scoop out the fiber, rather than having to pour it out.

I had never heard of inulin before and is not the easiest thing in the world to find. For me the best side effect is that I no longer feel as if I am starving to death, even after eating a big meal. I came across this product when I was doing an internet search.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Fiber Sure, November 10, 2011

I used Fiber Sure for years. About two years ago I couldn't find it anywhere. I finally tracked it down on Soap.com. I started buying my paper products there (your order ship free for $39+) Early this year it was no longer available. There isn't anything wrong with Clear & Natural except it doesn't mix well in anything ice cold. C&N serves its purpose. It's just like marrying a nice guy after your soul mate dies.

1.0 out of 5 stars INULIN, not "insulin", June 12, 2011

Some know-it-all on the Amazon.com website team must have thought he was correcting a misspelling when spellcheck did not recognize the word "inulin". Anyone who was alarmed by reading that this is mostly powdered "insulin", can rest assured that it is NOT.

As for WHAT IT IS: inulin is a natural sugar (e.g. quite a bit is in jerusalem artichokes), that can't be digested by humans, but can be fed upon by many microbes, some good and some not so good. It's a bit of a stretch to call it "fiber". Some yogurts and probiotic supplements include it to feed the active healthful probiotics in their products. I found out the hard way that it also feeds gas-forming yeasts in the gut. Yes, you will move your bowels more when you ingest this stuff b/c some of these microbes stimulate the gut directly or by filling it w/ gas. Personally, I think ingesting inulin has disgusting results, and after making the mistake of once buying yogurt that had it added, I never got anything containing it again.

THIS IS NOTHING LIKE METAMUCIL'S OTHER PRODUCTS WHICH ARE MAINLY GEL-FORMING POWDERS FROM THE HUSKS OF PSYLLIUM SEEDS. I was looking for an unsweetened version of Metamucil's psyllium powder when I ran into this, and thought I'd give amazon.com customers a heads up.
