1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I have used the original with no problems. This orange stuff should be advertised as a cure for diarrhea. I needed to take it short term with meds and I have been totally constipated the whole time. I followed directions. I will never use this prodect again because I will never put myself through the discomfort and actual pain again. It has been absolute hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiber: A Brief History, November 23, 2005
This review is from: Metamucil MultiHealth Fiber, Orange Flavor, 30.4 oz (Health and Beauty)
Everybody knows what Metamucil does. It has been on the market so long because it does it well. I take this product because my Doctor recommended it for good digestive and cardiac health. Some people (my Doctor included) feel that the benefits of a diet high in fiber, in this case psyllium, go beyond the GI tract and are beneficial to other physical systems. I have been taking this for several years (I take the capsules when I travel) with no side effects. Some people find the taste a bit objectionable, but I guess that I am just used to it by now.

Psyllium is used in Metamucil because of its very high mucilage content. Mucilage is the term used to describe a group of gelling agents made from plant fibers. Mucilage is made by grinding or milling the outer layer of the seed. Mucilage made from "Plantago" seeds is called psyllium husk. The mucilage from psyllium husk is a hydrophilic (water-loving), white, fibrous material. When water is absorbed (in this case in the intestines), the mucilaginous gel that forms increases in volume by more than a factor of ten, which, of course, is why it is extremely effective as a bulk laxative, as it is not digested by the small intestine. Because of this, psyllium mucilage serves to absorb excess water, while simultaneously stimulating gastrointestinal elimination.

As a socio-political aside, the United States is the world's largest psyllium importer, with the bulk (please pardon the pun) of imports for use in products such as Metamucil.

Now that you know all about the wonders of psyllium, you should know this: this is a very large container of psyllium. Very large. So large it does not fit in some cabinets, depending on shelf height. If you want to keep your Metamucil habit discreet, be forewarned that this is an extremely large container of fiber, and can be unwieldy to conceal.

Buying in bulk makes this a bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars What's your poop telling you?, December 30, 2011

It's poop magic. Do you know what a ghost wipe is?? It's when you wipe, and the toilet paper is clean. Like you never wiped. That's how awesome this stuff is. When I don't take this stuff, it's like wiping peanut butter out of a shag carpet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lower cholesterol while increasing fiber, July 21, 2010
By

I started taking sugar free Metamucil in place of Benefiber in order to get the cholesterol reducing benefit that Benefiber reportedly does not have. The aspartame in the Metamucil gave me headaches, so I had to switch to the sugared variety. The down side to Metamucil is that it does get thick if you don't drink it quickly. I used to just add Benefiber to my coffee in the morning and it was tasteless, clear and did not get thick. Very painless way to get fiber. But I do find the Metamucil seems to give me a better benefit as far as bowel regularity than the Benefiber did. I don't like the sugar in it but there does not seem to be a better alternative for me right now.
Another reviewer commented on the large container being hard to fit in the cupboard and even harder to hide if you didn't want to advertise your health issues. Buying in bulk for the cost saving does have its down side. Anyway, I keep mine proudly displayed in the cupboard next to drinking glasses so I don't forget to take it. But it can just as easily be transferred a little at a time into a pretty jar or tin, and replenished as needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metamucil works., July 12, 2011

What can I say? Metemucil works, not only to prevent constipation but also to prevent the runs. Our GI doc actually prescribed it years ago to slow down the works.
If you check the labels, Metamucil has more soluble fiber that any other supplement I could find. Cheaper too.
Since we use one cannister almost monthly the subscribe & save is great. If you drink it in about 10 oz. water quickly, it does not get mushy. Just don't let it sit for any length of time.
It is GF, has no MSG or related products or aspartates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tastes great, July 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The orange flavor is very orangey and not fake like artificial flavoring. It dissolves after a 10 second mix with a spoon and it tastes so good! If you leave it for awhile, it will thicken so drink immediately.

I noticed the difference immediately when I started the Metamucil. I have two Tablespoons as I do better on this amount. I take it once a day and am regular in the morning.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have used Metamucil for years and it has helped to lower my cholesterol and adds to a feeling of well being. Great product! Amazon has the best price I have found and I don't have to think about it, when I start to get low it automatically gets sent to me, "subscribe and save" is a no brainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tastes Better Than Generic, December 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Tastes much better than Walgreen's generic brand. Not as gritty and tastes better. I always say I'm drinking Tang when I drink this, and this actually tastes like a weak Tang. It's almost tasty. Also, I received an awesome price here on Amazon with subscribe 'n' save and they were also offering a $1 coupon.
