FAQs

Have Metamucil Capsules changed? Why does the label now say “One serving of Metamucil has 1.8 grams of this soluble fiber” when it used to say 2.4 grams of this soluble fiber?

Metamucil Capsules have not changed. One serving of Metamucil MultiHealth capsules now contains 1.8 grams of soluble fiber. Previously the label stated one serving has 2.4 grams of soluble fiber. This was updated to reflect the serving size change from 6 capsules per serving to 5 capsules per serving and makes the serving size the same as the Metamucil Fiber Capsules Plus Calcium.

What does natural psyllium mean?

Metamucil contains psyllium husk, a natural dietary fiber originating from Plantago ovata, which promotes digestive health,* helps lower blood cholesterol levels to promote heart health,† and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels as part of your diet.*

Is there any scientific or medical evidence for the heart health claim?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed extensive scientific data including numerous clinical studies to determine that psyllium husk, as in Metamucil, may help lower cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet† .

Why should I talk to my doctor before I take Metamucil to lower cholesterol or to maintain healthy blood sugar levels?

We recommend that you contact your doctor before using Metamucil as part of a diet to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering cholesterol or to maintain your healthy blood sugar levels. There are many factors that your doctor will need to consider, including your health, medical and family history, lifestyle, other medication, and other risk factors. Your doctor is the best one to advise you.

Also, consider bulk-forming fibers like psyllium husk may affect how well medicines work. Take Metamucil at least 2 hours before or after medicines.

Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk, as in Metamucil and Meta Health Bars, may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. One adult serving of Metamucil Powder has 2.4 grams of this soluble fiber. One Meta Health Bar and one serving of Metamucil Fiber capsules have at least 1.8 grams of this soluble fiber.

So this supplement contains calcium carbonate, which is the chemical name for chalk. The citrate form of most vitamins/micronutrients is the most highly absorbable form. It is also quite a bit more expensive. Why add that when you can just add chalk (calcium carbonate) and make everyone think that they're getting their daily allowance of Ca+ and then some; plus charge more and hence maximize your profit?

This supplement also contains titanium dioxide, commonly used as a pigment, and strongly suspected to be a carcinogen.

However, the psyllium husk contained herein is great. Go for the Metamucil capsules for "digestive and heart health" with the red label; and get your calcium elsewhere! Find a high quality absorbable form like calcium citrate or calcium malate.

I liked the regular Metamucil Capsules (red label), so I tried Metamucil Capsules plus Calcium. Gave me gas. I agree with previous reviewer, if you want Calcium, try Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D.

I take Metamucil in its many forms regularly. It takes a few days for it to start working, and it must be taken with lots of fluids or else it can cause choking or a blockage of the gut.

The advantage of capsule form with calcium is that it doesn't need to be mixed in water and I can avoid the gritty residue of the powder. I also get a little extra calcium. However, it may be difficult for some people to swallow. When I first started taking them, I had the sensation that they would float, so it took extra effort to swallow them. They also give me lots of gas, but that gets better with time.

I think the primary disadvantage of the capsule form is the number of capsules that must be taken. At five capsules per dose, taken the maximum of four times per day, a bottle of 120 capsules only lasts ten days. I only take three capsules a day, and that is enough to keep things running smoothly for me. That doesn't give me nearly enough of what I need in calcium every day (5 capsules = 300 mg calcium), but every little bit helps.

One side note: as a general rule, try not to take Metamucil with other medications, as it can impede absorption.

I hope that this is working for a lot of you, but it is not working for me. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and have had to use psyllium fiber for a number of years. I used to use Metamucil with Calcium and did not notice any problems. Maybe about 2 years ago I was no longer able to get this in the stores so I switched to Target's Up & Up brand and had no major complaints. Well, I couldn't find that one week when I needed it, so I decided to spend more than double on this. I don't know if my condition has worsened or if they changed the formula, but I am in so much pain! Here's where it gets a little detailed so I will apologize in advance. Since taking this, I have had the WORST hemorrhoids ever. Instead of improving the consistency of my bowel movements, it makes them a lot more frequent and not very satisfying. Regardless, this is not helping and I am hurting so bad right now. I will spend the $4+ on Target's brand and stick to that and find another way to supplement my calcium.

This is a product I buy regularly but for some reason is not available in the drug stores, grocery stores or on-line. I was glad to find some available but shocked that it cost twice as much as I had been paying previously.

The thing about taking your psyllium this way is that being in capsule form, the manufacturer doesn't have to add sugar or artificial sweetener. And everyone who has struggled with the powder form knows how hard it is to keep the stuff in suspension long enough to get it down. In addition, I have always been reluctant to send something that expands into a semi-solid mass down the drain, having a picture in my mind of the eventual clog that could result from repeated washing of the glass. So there's a lot to be said for this form.

I suppose there may be a worry that people won't take the capsules with enough water. And I couldn't find any indication of exactly how much is in each capsule. You can either break one open and measure it or guess based on the dosing instructions. At any rate I wanted some in capsule form for traveling, when doing the mixing dance is too complicated.

So the worst downside is cost. Figure they're telling you to take 5 of these capsules 4 times daily. Holy smokes, that means for this price you get six days worth for this price! One little hint is that even the World's Smallest Wally World in my town carries their generic version, this much for four dollars and forty-nine cents. Huh!

But there's another downside: the dyes they have put in. I can't think of any reason for needing dye in a capsule and the ones included are a real problem for susceptible individuals. Just Google them.

This was disappointing on a couple of points:
1. This contains calcium ~ a substance which needs to be limited in one's diet as it is necessary but potentially dangerous. For as long as I have used Metamucil, I have wondered what the difference with the blue cap was. There is VERY small print which says it contains calcium. Since I take calcium in the amount I need, this extra was not wanted.
2. This was not a Prime item, so it did not come from a company near me. I ordered when it was in the budget not when it was needed, so I was upset when it was slow getting into the mail and coming ALL the way across the country. I try to order things I need from closer sources, but this was not an Amazon warehouse item.
Metamucil capsules are a great source of fiber, and I have been using them since a doctor told me to get more fiber. No, I do not take 6 a day, but you must ease into the number you do need. This dosage was difficult to compare with my usual capsules since it is a different formula. The formulation you sprinkle on your food does not appeal to me at all, and you need to space these out so the fiber does not interfere with your prescription medicines. With capsules, I take them once a day two hours after AND two hours before any other medicines (of which I take too many to worry about the spacing more than once a day).
