Andrew Cyrille's "Metamusicians' Stomp" is a terrific jazz album that pays homage to the experimentation and innovation of the past, in order to forge its own distinct sound for the future. Joining drummer Cyrille on this 1978 session are a young David S. Ware (who has become one of today's leading jazz musicians) on tenor sax, Ted Daniel on trumpet and Nick DiGeronimo on bass. The title track for this modern/avant-garde date has a delightful rhythmic build-up courtesy of Cyrille and DiGeronimo, and an infectious theme. "My Ship" is a traditional slow blues despite Ware's wild double-time solo. "5-4-3-2" sounds like a 70s version of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic Quartet, with a little "Song X" tossed in. "Spiegelgasse 14" begins and ends with Ware and Daniel on flute, and has always reminded me of McCoy Tyner's "Sahara." As the song develops (and it's a long one), it alternates between DiGeronimo's quiet, introspective bass lines and the quartet's furious free jazz bursts. In all, "Metamusicians' Stomp" is a great CD, and fans of Cecil Taylor, David S. Ware, David Murray or Ornette Coleman should enjoy it.
