Editorial Reviews

Review

"There are books that deserve a special place for their being long-lasting and valuable contributions to the clarification of a field or a theoretical object. Metaphor and Thought has been one among them since it first appeared in 1979 and is still certainly so, now, in this enriched second edition." Cristina Cacciari, Contemporary Psychology

"...an excellent investment for anyone who would like to sample a menu rich in papers on this crucial psychological process. For those still wavering in skepticism (who cannot believe metaphor is all that crucial), this book could well make the difference." Contemporary Psychology

"Ortony and others involved in this project are to be congratulated...this volume is a persuasive demonstration that for the theories of language, communication, and cognition, an adequate account of metaphor is a necessity and no mere nicety." Canadian Journal of Philosophy

Book Description

This new edition reflects the surge of interest in and research into the nature and function of metaphor in language and thought. Reorganized and expanded, it includes six new chapters as well as updated versions of the original essays to cover recent developments in the field.

More About the Author

I am a certified wellness coach and a leader in the US of a new healing process called Family Constellations. My long and rich professional life began doing medical and cognitive science research at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. Although I was very successful in academics, the work seemed too abstract. As part of an ongoing quest for personal and intellectual wholeness, I later moved into business systems analysis and technology management. These became my "day jobs." I wrote extensively for technical, trade, and popular publications--and eventually became a Chief Technical Officer.

But, with a disturbed family background, and significant wellness issues of my own, I also undertook in the meantime seven years training in shamanic healing techniques from Native American and mixed blood elders. Teaching these ways and healing others became for two decades my "night job." Systems theory, shamanism, and healing all came together for me in 2008 in a full-time practice of WholeSelf and WholeFamily Wellness Coaching.

Where physical and emotional suffering have gotten stuck in client's lives, I see severe fragmentation of lives and families, coupled with mechanical, impersonal, over-specialized, drug heavy healthcare--most often at the root of it. With a combination of genuine empathy (having been there myself) and cutting edge knowledge and coaching tools--I am extremely good at leading clients back towards wholeness and getting that suffering "unstuck." Left-over loyalties to unresolved issues in the birth family's past are often the "missing link."

An impassioned writer and speaker, I work to share my insights with professionals and the public alike.

45 of 56 people found the following review helpful By Cassandra Armstrong on December 22, 1999
Format: Hardcover
Ortony's 2nd edition of Metaphor and Thought incorporates research done since the publication of his first edition. Authors added include George Lakoff, Ray Gibbs and other leading researchers in this heavily explored area. This volume partially duplicates the first edition while providing the reader with additional insights from cognitive psychology, linguistics and philosophy of language. Owners of the first edition will want to augment it with this volume. The original group was impressive : Max Black, Ortony, Schank, Reddy, et al. Their ranks have been swollen with apt companions to produce this well organized discussion of the many ways metaphor influences the lives and cultures of the people using it to express ideas.
