5.0 out of 5 stars Meditation is concentration used to know God, January 17, 2004
By
This review is from: Metaphysical Meditations: Universal Prayers, Affirmations, and Visualizations (Paperback)
I believe that this little book of spiritual meditations is valuable no matter what your religious background happens to be. It emphasizes the interconnectiveness of all true spiritual paths; indeed, the text starts off with a prayer for a united world. It is useful for either formal meditation practice, or deep focused prayer.

Meditation, as it is used here, is the science of God-realization. Its ultimate objective is to obtain conscious awareness of God. This is achieved through concentration. While the basic mechanics of meditation technique are covered, the real substance of the book is the devotional passages that are to be focused on. One doesn't merely read through the text in one sitting. These are individual passages that are intended for focused concentration and prayer one at a time. You meditate, dwell on, and feel them. Some of the language may seem a bit flowery at times, but if you focus on the meaning being expressed, then you realize that every single entry contains its measure of spiritual truth.

It should be noted that Yogananda makes repeated reference to Christ in the highest cosmic sense. He even includes a section of Christmas meditations. He obviously had a deep appreciation the concept of the Godman savior who he associates with Krishna, as well as, several other avatars.

This particular edition has been in print since 1925, revised in 1952 and 1964. The leatherette cover is durable and attractive. You can easily fit it into your pocket for reference when you feel the need. Few specialized terms are used, but when they are, then they are explained in footnotes. A bibliography of Yogananda's other works is included in back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your first step toward meditation on The Divine, November 8, 2002
This review is from: Metaphysical Meditations: Universal Prayers, Affirmations, and Visualizations (Paperback)
If you are of devotional bent and open-minded, here is guidance and inspiration from a yoga master and meditation teacher who honors and supports the teachings of all the great religions and all true spiritual teachers.

This handly shirt-pocket-sized collection of starting points for meditation also provides a beginner with a simple way to start the practice of meditation. Yogananda speaks from the perspective of one who has total commitment to Spirit and to us, Spirit's bewildered and earthbound creations. Readers of varied religious backgrounds and different spiritual temperaments will all find something to spur them to higher practice of their own paths.

If you resonate with this non-sectarian, universal approach to spiritual growth, be sure also to read Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi for more information on the powerfully liberating advanced meditation methods of Kriya Yoga that Yogananda teaches in his instructions through Self-Realization Fellowship (publisher of this volume). Their web site ( Yogananda-SRF dot org ) provides a beautiful introduction to these meditation methods.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second only to Scripture!, September 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Metaphysical Meditations: Universal Prayers, Affirmations, and Visualizations (Paperback)
This little book is so full of spiritual wisdom that I place it just short of scriptures such as the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita (both of which influenced the thought portrayed here). I have several copies of this book (car, work, home). Its perspective is a yogic one, but its truths are universally applicable. Paramahansa Yogananda is unique among so-called gurus in being one that truly walked his talk. There is advice for all areas of life and everything said is filled with love and moderation. You will find no book outside of scripture that has more spiritual bang for your buck, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK TOUCHES MY SOUL, October 11, 2006
This review is from: Metaphysical Meditations: Universal Prayers, Affirmations, and Visualizations (Paperback)
Inspiring and uplifting words are what you will find in this book! The title 'Metaphysical Meditations'doesn't seem to do justice to the beauty of this book, and yet, I don't know what words would. Also, another reason to not be put off by the title is that this book, in my opinion, crosses over and into all religions. You do not need be a follower of Paramahansa Yogananda or Self-Realization to reap the rich benefits of reading these meditations. An open mind and heart and love of God is enough.

The book is small, pocket sized, which makes it perfect for carrying with you. -And once you begin reading this, you'll want to have it with you to glance at whenever you feel the need, have a need, or for an inspirational pick up, or whenever you happen to have a few moments to spare. I like to flip this open in the mornings, and anytime throughout the day and read whatever page I come to.

The book begins with a 'Prayer for a United World.' Then, there's a forward that goes over meditation briefly. Which begins with this: "Most persons would want to meditate if they understood how to do so. The purpose of meditation is to know God, to connect the little joy of the soul with the vast joy of the spirit."

The meditations are short, 3-5 lines per paragraph on a page, and easy to read. No complicated long winded stuff in here. Some of my favourite titles/meditations from this book are:
'Never Lose Hope'
'Spreading Divine Joy'
'Creative Activity'
'Overcoming Fear and Worry'
'Divine Prosperity'
There's also a "Christmas Meditations" section in the back.

There is so much love in this book.
This is a great gift to give as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable & Potent, July 25, 2004
By
This review is from: Metaphysical Meditations: Universal Prayers, Affirmations, and Visualizations (Paperback)
I love this little pocket sized devotional book. I use it daily before and after meditation.

The other great part of it is its size. It fits easily in my purse and in even in my back pocket, so I take it with me on doctor appointments and on hiking trails. The cover is dark blue and discreet for those who prefer to keep their public spiritual readings private.

The content is absolutely beautiful & powerful in getting and/or keeping ones mind & emotions in line with The Divine.
