Format: Paperback
Dover editions provide the basic poetic texts without serious and extended commentary. In a sense there is an advantage in this as it encourages the reader to engage the text, and seek understanding through reading and rereading. But there is also a great disadvantage especially when it comes to complicated poetry like that of the Metaphysicals whose complex linking of diverse images , whose intellectual toughness requires explanation.

Nonetheless there is great poetry here at the usual Dover very reasonable price.

As for the Metaphysicals themselves Donne is of course at the center. But there is also great poetry from Herbert and Marvell. This is a poetry in which the heart is very much in the mind, and one must have a strong intellect to understand.

I know the challenge and delight of this poetry, and also understand how many readers find it most fascinating and great.( As did T.S. Eliot)

But I nonetheless find my own heart and mind better expressed, reflected and uplifted in the Romantics (Wordsworth especially) who will come later.

I have had an interest in poetry most of my life. I enjoy reading most forms of poetry with the exception of the present day incoherent free verse garbage poetry that seems to be so popular among todays pseudo-intellectuals. My favorite kinds of poetry are the shorter poetry forms of 12 lines or less. This is my first exposure to the Metaphysical poetry of the seventeenth century.

I found it sometimes interesting but it appears the focus of these poets are many times more religious or spiritural in nature. This is fine if that is your interest; however, I found many of the long poems boring and bizarre. At times it was difficult plowing through the entire collection of long poems but I will will admit to enjoying some of the poems in this 206 page volume.

This book is organized into the poetry collection of six metaphysical poets. They are as follows: John Donne (1572-1631), Anderew Marvell (1621-1678), George Herbert (1593-1633), Richard Crashaw (1613-1649), Henry Vaughan (1621-1695), and Thomas Traherne (1637-1674). A brief biography is given of each poet at the beginning of the section. There is also an index of titles and first lines of each poem in this text.

In conclusion, many of these poems are interesting and thoughtful, which is why I gave this book 4 stars. If you are interested in Metaphysical Poetry, this is a good collection to begin your study.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Season of the Warrior: A poetic tribute to warriors)
