Editorial Reviews

Presenting the original motion picture score from the 1979 American International motion picture event METEOR, starring Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden and Henry Fonda. Acclaimed composer Laurence Rosenthal (ROOSTER COGBURN, WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN, CLASH OF THE TITANS) fashions an inventive, dynamic orchestral score with electronic flourishes that brings this star-studded disaster epic to life. Previously released at the time of the film only in Japan, and also as a composer promo in 1997 with just under 39 minutes of music, this Limited Edition release differs from the promo in that a couple of cues have been combined, one new track was located (Track 3B: "The Meteor #2") and the track names have been transcribed from the original cue sheet titles. Also, the sound has been digitally remastered. This is a Limited Edition of 1200 Units. TRACK LISTING METEOR Main Title (4:24) Challenger 2 (2:45) The Meteor #1 / The Meteor #2 / 30,000 MPH (2:09) The Russians Arrive (0:54) Siberia (2:00) The Meteor #3 (0:53) Dubov's Rage (0:56) Prepare For Realigning Peter The Great (0:47) Realigning Peter The Great / Realigning Hercules (3:50) Alpine Innocence / Paul and Tatiana (2:55) Countdown (2:32) Manhattan Splinter (2:24) Hercules Rising / Malfunction / Trapped / One Rocket Lost (2:55) Assault and Impact (3:20) METEOR Band March / METEOR End Credits (7:02) Total Time: 40:22

Another case of a really worthwhile music score being stuck in a dud movie. Laurence Rosenthal, one of the most reliable film and television composers around, has done wonders with "Meteor", a disaster movie which proved to be a disaster both critically and at the box office. The film's idea seemed sound: a great big meteor hurtling towards Earth and picking out NYC as one of its targets and the efforts of Cold War powers USA and USSR to combat further destruction. Great cast, more than adequate director but bogged down with a crummy script and not such great special effects, "Meteor" will be best remembered for its excellent Rosenthal symphonic score aided by some neat asteroid music sounds by Craig Hundley. As a footnote, John Williams was originally going to score this film but delays and other commitments forced him to relinquish the project; he recommended Rosenthal and we should be grateful he did.

From earthquakes, airplane disasters, and burring buildings...we sure did see a lot of disaster movies in the 70's. Since every other natural disaster had been played around with, why not throw a meteor at the Earth and make a movie about that? Well...they certainly did and although this particular movie has gotten some pretty negative reviews over the years, I can remember enjoying it as a kid. While not the greatest movie, due largely from poor script and low budget effects, it certainly provided enough to make it entertaining to me.

The one thing that everyone can agree upon is how great the Laurence Rosenthal score for this film is. Without his music for the film, my assessment for the movie might be very different. Rosenthal's music and Craig Huxley's sound effects are indeed outstanding. I hate those disco-groove sounding scores from this time period so I am thankful that Rosenthal was chosen to provide a legitimate score that still sounds great today. The score provides what sometimes the on screen action doesn't. Rosenthal's score creates the imaginative ambience that keeps this film from becoming a literal disaster. The score is very enjoyable to listen to and Huxley's included "space sounds" are really cool as well.

The score is another great release by Intrada. The CD comes with a 16 page insert complete with concept art, film photos, and a detailed narrative concerning the making of the movie and score restoration. There are 16 tracks on the discs with a total running time of 41 minutes. The CD insert also has an alternate album cover. The back cover of the insert can be used as the front cover which is pretty cool. I recommend this one for your collection!

Meteor - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack recaptures the feelings I felt when first watching the film helping me to relive those exciting moments as Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden and Brian Keith try to save the Earth.from being hit by a giant Meteor. Laurence Rosenthal did a masterful job when he composed the music for Meteor. I have always liked this movie and yearned for the soundtrack to be released on CD one day. Now my wish has been granted ! The movie may not have received the accolades that it deserved, admittedly some of the dialogue and Special Effects could have been done better but the All Star Cast and the music were what made it memorable for me ! I really enjoyed this CD, sound quality is excellent ! Intrada have done a magnificent job ! Note:This is the Original Music from the film not a re orchestrated version. It comes with a comprehensive booklet containing production notes and photos from the film. I would highly recommend this product to anyone !
