Book Description

December 23, 2010

A fascinating and authoritative introduction to the science of meteorites, written by leading experts in the field.

Meteorites are rocks from space that have fallen to the Earth's surface. Once considered bad omens, they are now recognized for giving us a unique insight into the nature of the material that was present when our solar system formed.

In Meteorites, experts from the Natural History Museum in London, England, provide a compelling and up-to-date introduction to these otherworldly objects.

This fully illustrated guide reveals:

  • What meteorites are
  • Where meteorites come from
  • What they tell us about our solar system
  • The latest information on key meteorite falls.

In clear, jargon-free language, the authors explain how meteorites provide us with invaluable information about planets beyond Earth -- both within our solar system and around other stars.

With its combination of color photographs, diagrams and maps, Meteorites is the ultimate reference to these mysterious objects from space.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

An up-to-date introduction to meteorites and their scientific importance, this short work bears the imprimatur of London’s Natural History Museum, with which the authors are associated. Containing ample photographs and diagrams, the work taps into the fact that meteorites are a field in which amateurs can make a genuine contribution to science by reporting a fireball in the sky or finding a meteorite on the ground. Accordingly, the authors describe what extraterrestrial rocks look like and the regions in which they are apt to be found and then delve into their significance to scientists such as themselves. In short, the mineralogy of meteorites records the origins of the solar system. Photographs of thin-slice sections show in kaleidoscopic vividness how visually varied the interior of meteorites are, while the authors’ text explains the lines of chemical evidence by which scientists connect a meteorite to an epoch of time or a specific asteroid of origin. Including photos of recent space missions dedicated to meteoritic research, this is a capable title for libraries needing an introductory book on meteorites. --Gilbert Taylor --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

"This new book from the Natural History Museum does a great job of introducing the science of meteoritics...this is accompanied by a wonderful selection of vivid imagery...the authors do well to cover so much ground in such a thin volume and manage to skilfully capture the fascination that the subject inspires." BBC Sky at Night magazine "Meteorites provides a jargon-free introduction to these Rosetta stones of the Solar System...the book has a really modern feel to it; it is well illustrated with clear diagrams and plentiful crisp photographs of real meteorites that bring to life what is being said in the text...this book makes an excellent introductory text for someone who has no prior knowledge of meteorites and is looking for a basic grounding in the subject." Astronomy Now --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Early Solar System In The Palm of Your Hand, September 29, 2009
By
dream factory (Triangulum, M33) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Meteorites (Hardcover)
The simply titled 'Meteorites' proves itself a wonderful book. It presents the whole field of "rocks from space" in a comprehensive yet easily digested manner.

The information herein is for the most part straight-forward. Pages overflow with interesting data about the various aspects of the world of meteorites:
The history of their domain (the solar system).
The atmposphere of their dwelling places.
Their inherent nature and composition.
The history of their earthly existance and contact with humanity.
Every aspect of meteorite information is expounded upon by this well versed author. Her love for the subject is evident.

The layout of this book is well thought out and adds to the informative text. The spread on each subject is well planned. The photographs of rocks are simply gorgeous.

Both to the weathered meteorite hound or the curious novice it is a mysterious and amazing field. And in this field full of so many books this book immediately sits at the top of the list.

This review is from: Meteorites (Hardcover)
"Meteorites" is a great introduction to the entire science surrounding these enigmatic little rocks from space. It is written at an accessible level that would be ideal as a reference for high school students or for someone just developing an interest in the field of meteorites. What I liked best was the contemporary information contained within and in addition to the main text. The science of asteroids, comets, impacts, astrobiology, and meteorites changes so quickly that it's hard to find a text with such accurate, current information. I recommend this book to anyone who has even a passing interest in meteorites.
