When I was growing up, I got to know Jerry Lewis through reruns of his classic movies and through the annual Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day telethon. His goofiness was amusing enough, but I don't think I ever fully understood his impact. I've respected some of his more serious work in later years (Scorsese's The King of Comedy, TV's Wiseguy), but honestly haven't given his legacy much thought. When I saw that Encore was premiering a documentary entitled "Method To The Madness Of Jerry Lewis," I thought it might be a bit of nostalgic fun. What I wasn't prepared for, however, was how much it would it would teach me about Lewis and his accomplishments. As a man and as an actor, Gregg Barson's engaging tribute really highlights what was (and is) special about everyone's favorite clown. Anyone with an interest in Lewis should thoroughly enjoy this retrospective.

The film does a good job presenting a well rounded portrait of the entertainer. We get to learn about his history (although it is no means a comprehensive dissection of his private life), his contributions to film and TV, and his philanthropic interests. It is heartfelt at times, but grounded as well. The archival footage shows Lewis with his father, covers lots of time with Dean Martin, and gives us a ton of film clips. Seriously, since watching this documentary, I have revisited some of Lewis's best known films and enjoyed them with a new (and more adult) perspective. This movie made me a fan again. I loved that it piqued my curiosity once more. And I enjoyed the fresh take on the Lewis and Martin partnership as it is seen in a new light.

There are a lot of famous faces that chime in about the impact Lewis has made. People like Carl Reiner and Carol Burnett have more intimate stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't forget me February 7, 2013
Format:DVD
The 2011 documentary METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS caused me to look up just how long it's been since I saw a new movie Jerry Lewis directed or in which he acted. As I write this in 2013, it's been thirty years since Lewis was the director-star of the film CRACKING UP, his last feature unless you count small roles here and there.

Thirty years! Now, since then Jerry Lewis's charitable work and television appearances have kept him in the limelight and there probably isn't a minute per day where one of his films isn't playing somewhere on television. But viewing METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS, you may realize that while it's not as though the public doesn't remember Lewis, some may have forgotten about his talent as a performer and filmmaker.

But don't take my word for it, especially with Steven Spielberg, Eddie Murphy, Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Chevy Chase, Jerry Seinfeld, and Quentin Tarantino among the Lewis fans who remind us of his considerable contributions to the arts. Of all interviewed in METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS Tarantino is the last one I'd expect to be a Lewis fan, yet he offers the most compelling observations about the actor-director.

While you could knock METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS for seeming to shy away from any criticism of Lewis as either an artist or an individual, its clips of his personal appearances do not hide his tendency to get corny and even smug now and then. I don't think that's by accident. He's human like the rest of us, and this documentary puts that out there.

See METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS.
