Editorial Reviews

Review

"This text contains a broad ranging series of chapters from multiple authors devoted to laboratory and clinically based methods for assessing physiological function and pathobiology of the gastrointestinal tract. Chapters cover focused topics that are likely to be of interest to laboratory-based or clinically based investigators who wish to obtain insight into an investigative method. For the most part, each chapter follows a logical format divided into background, methods for clinical studies, and where appropriate, applications to animal studies. A few chapters are devoted to established in vitro laboratory measurements or to patient-based techniques, including evaluation of intestinal secretion, absorption, ion transport and motility. Others provide insight into more sophisticated novel techniques, including a chapter on methods of visualising and quantitating intestinal epithelial cell proliferation in three dimensions. For the most part, descriptions of specific methods are superficial. A few components of this book might serve to introduce a laboratory-based clinician-scientist to specific in vitro techniques of gastrointestinal function. Other chapters, devoted to direct studies of the gastrointestinal tract in patients, might be of interest to the clinical gastroenterologist." - Methods in Disease: Investigating the Gastrointestinal Tract.
