As it says in the Foreword, this is *not* a current O.R. textbook. It's a reprint of material originally written during WW2, slightly updated a few years after the war, and it pre-dates some important methods developed later. So it's not a substitute for a modern text.

What it *is*, is a fascinating historical look at how operations research first came into existence, and how it influenced the course of World War Two. Was it worth putting antiaircraft guns on merchant ships? (Initially it didn't seem so, but more careful analysis gave a different answer.) Should air-dropped depth charges be set to explode deep or shallow? (The answer was, even shallower.) How should a warship best dodge a kamikaze? What changes should be made to convoy strategy to make U-boats less effective? Some of these things show up in later accounts too, but sometimes the details have gotten garbled, and it's good to read an account by the folks who were there.

Skim lightly over the technical methods, but slow down and read the case studies carefully. That's the heart of this book, for a modern audience.
