5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Weight-Lifting
My friends and I do some heavy weightlifting in another friend's garage. We were running into issues on a hot day with sweat slicking up our hands and making it hard to hold the bar. So we decided we need some chalk, but we didn't want to leave chalk dust all over the garage.

This Eco Ball was *perfect*. It gave us the grip we need, and didn't leave...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good chalk substitute
I feel like the quality of the chalk substitute is great. It really helped me on weight lifting. Unfortunately the bag broke my first time using it so I spilled the whole bag in my pocket. That is the only reason I don't like it. Especially since I bought it trying to be covert in my gym.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Weight-Lifting, September 12, 2009
This review is from: Metolius Eco Ball (Non-Marking Chalk Substitute) (Misc.)

It gave us the grip we need, and didn't leave chalk marks all over the floor, equipment, or us. It doesn't even really show up on your hands. The ball is especially useful for keeping the dust under control. I have a feeling that even if I got this kind of chalk outside of the ball form, it would get everywhere.

So, I don't know about rock-climbing, but for weightlifting, this little Eco Ball gets the job done. When we finally use up the one we have, I will definitely be getting another one.

Bought this for pole dancing-I am an Instructor. Often my students need something to reduce the sweat on their hands which impedes their grip. This product seemed to work fine. Doesn't leave a grit on the pole like the antihydral creams do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for CrossFit, November 11, 2010

Being a CrossFit gym we are big on using chalk with pretty much all the Olympic lifts and with the pull-up bars. After months of daily cleaning off chalk on the bumper plates, floor, and pull-up bars something needed to change. The average lifter who is just beginning to use chalk doesn't understand that they are not Lebron James or that they don't have to chalk every time they go near a bar.

So out of desperation we tried the Metolius Eco Chalk and it is fantastic! It leaves very little residue even for the client who pounds it in his hands and creates a mushroom cloud. It is sticky and does work well on sweaty hands. As mentioned in the other reviews...it does dry your hands out. While it is a more expensive that a chalk bag it is a far better solution for a gym setting.

I didn't order this for rock climbing. I ordered it to take to my gym and what I got was a pink one! Not a huge deal but i would have preferred one like the one in the picture. It does provide you with a great grip and it doesn't leave as much of a mess as regular chalk but it is not completely mess free.

5.0 out of 5 stars No problem in a gym that doesn't allow chalk, March 3, 2011

I am a traditional, barbell weight/powerlifter. There are a few specialty gyms in my area that cater to purist lifters like me, and where traditional chalk would be welcome. I don't have a membership at one of those gyms. They're too far away and inconvenient.
I attend a family gym that doesn't allow chalk. Too messy and perhaps too intimidating to some of the patrons. But not using chalk can be a real problem when lifting heavy.
I bought an Eco Ball last fall. Brought it in and showed it to gym management; showed how it wasn't like the other stuff. They gave me a thumbs up. I've been using it ever since and I'm very happy with it.
With a little effort you can press enough chalk out of the bag to create a visible layer on your hands. Or get just enough to take the slickness off your hands.
Whatever your preference, the chalk helps tremendously with grip. It's allowed in my "no-chalk" gym. It's convenient to carry around. It costs about the same as a McDonald's Happy Meal and should last for months. I don't have a complaint.

My YMCA doesn't allow chalk. This thing is great! It doesn't leave any mess behind. It really helps with grip for heavy dead-lifts and upright rows. It washes off easily enough too. I would suggest you leave it in it's plastic bag and set it aside until your ready to use it so you don't lose the filling unnecessarily. I find I just need to gently roll it between my hands a couple times and it does the trick. It seems like it should last a long time, but I haven't had it long enough to really know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for weight lifting!, February 7, 2011

My gym doesn't allow chalk so I bought one of these and just keep it in my pocket and simply reach in and squeeze in-between sets. Works like traditional chalk without the mess, fills your skin folds making your hand surface smooth, with that comes less skin being pressed down leading to less callus formation, and features an anti moisture agent that prevents sweating (improves grip). So basically any 'pulling' workouts have become a lot easier. My only complaints would be its a little big, wish they made a smaller size to keep in your pocket easier. Lastly it looks like a dead mouse so just be forewarned!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good grip but a funky feeling, September 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I got this because I was running low on chalk in my gym bag, and I wanted something that made a little less mess. I'm not a rock climber, I use it for weightlifting, mostly for deadlift. This does a really good job of giving the needed grip. It feels different but comparable to traditional chalk. It's a LOT less messy. While it makes a cloud of dust when you put it on, the dust does not make a visible mess. The big thing I don't like about it is that it is designed for someone like a rock climber who doesn't have the luxury of re-applying it constantly. It has some sort of anti-moisture agent that really dries out the hands and feels weird, even after you wash your hands a few times.

Gets the job done with very little residue. I keep it in the plastic bag it came with in my bag and it saves my hands on pull ups and other pull movements.

I'm using this at the gym, not on the climbing wall, as "real" chalk was turning out to be too messy.

Some observations:
-Cleaner than my old chalk hunk in a bag
-Less (visible) mess. My gym is gracious about chalk usage, but if yours isn't, this would probably be stealthy enough if you're discreet
-Seemingly more drying power than the chalk I had been using, so I use less
-Does dry the hands just like it says it will. Not a big deal for me personally
-Way easier to manage in a fabric bag instead of the plastic baggie it comes in. The purple bag everyone's favorite whiskey comes in would be about the right size.
