Product Description

Turbokits are uniquely designed to provide the right combination of strength, appearance and versatility. In many cases, a rear support for the aftermarket radio is provided; it is either built into the kit or supplied with it. This adds strength to the kit and makes Turbokits the strongest in the business. They are the industry standard for installation kits.. often copied, never duplicated.

Once I figured that out, everything was simple.

This is a high quality kit for installing a new stereo on some models of the Ford Taurus and Mercuty Sable.

The good news is, the wiring harness is quality and hooked up nicely to the wiring in the trunk.

I received this kit from Amazon a couple days ago and put it and my new radio in my '02 Taurus in about 2 hours. It is sturdy and looks nice though it doesn't look like factory equipment. I chose this one because others were said to look cheap and feel flimsy. This one is definitely better than that.

The plastic is multi layer and sturdy and holds the radio without any problem. This adapter has back lighting for the climate controls too and they look better than those on the 96 - 99 kit also made by Metra which look pretty cheezy.

The biggest complaint (and its not that bad) is that the instructions could be a little more detailed. But after getting familiar with everything the installation was pretty easy. It would also be nice if they included the removal tools. I ended up shoving drill bits and allen keys in the holes then pushing the old one out from behind.

One quick note, if your new radio is deeper than the Ford control unit, you will probably have to remove the bracket that is designed to hold the back of the radio. If you don't the kit will bulge out since it can't slide all the way into the opening.

Overall I'm very happy with this kit.

THIS IS BY FAR, THE BEST KIT FOR FORD TAURUS' 2000 - 2006!

I owned the Scosche kit for 5 days, the material was thin around the face and the posts that are suppost to keep the install kit from popping out of the dash, while removing it, one of those posts broke!

I order this kit the next day and have had no problems with it. This kit is made with thicker plastics where it should be, the rear defogger button doesn't look cheezy, the backlighting for the A/C controls are much more lit.

My daughter's 2002 Ford Taurus SE had a broken CD player and no AUX-IN. I purchased this unit to give me a broader choice of radios.

It worked excellently well. The faceplate seemed a little flimsy in the box, but when it snapped into the dash it looked and felt like factory equipment. The locations for the knobs was exactly right, and the four controls plugged in firmly, again like factory.

The wiring harness worked well, but it was a major pain to route it through the car from the trunk unit to the front panel. I strongly recommend removing the center console between the two front seats in order to get it routed properly, but this was just 4 bolts.

Some of the other reviewers were unhappy with the lack of a wiring diagram, but I found that the wires in the wiring harness were labeled (ie, "Left Front Pos", "Left Front Neg", "GND", etc, on the wires themselves). Once I figured that out, everything was simple. The wire colors also matched the wire colors on my JVC stereo system, which was very convenient.

The directions don't mention this, but *DO NOT CUT THE FACTORY PLUG" that came from the old radio. The wiring harness that comes with the Metra unit snaps into that plug, with only the four external wires on the Metra unit being spliced into your new radio plug (power, ground, etc).

It took me four hours to install: 2.5 hours of unhappiness running the wires, and 1.5 hours of front panel work. But all of the existing Ford controls and the new stereo worked perfectly the first time I powered it up.

Follow directions, take your time, and you will be very happy with this unit.

The dash kit itself looks awesome (so I'm keeping it). I'm quite a bit irritated, though, that I thought I was going to have to either buy an additional wiring harness, or manually wire the stereo in myself (which I didn't really want to do). For the physical component, this is the best there is, but wiring it is going to be next to impossible. I originally though the wiring harness didn't fit. I've put radios into at least a dozen cars over the years with kits like this and never run across one like this. It wouldn't be a problem if the instructions for the kit mentioned at ALL what the wiring situation was. Here's the deal - the LONG wire bundle hooks up into a rear control unit in the left side of the trunk (under the liner). The wire bundle must then be installed into the trim of the car all the way to the front of the car, where the bare ends of the wires are then soldered into the wires for your stereo. The wire plug that comes our of your stock stereo *controls the rear control unit* and is therefore not used in any way to install your aftermarket stereo. It's a PITA, but the kit from Metra is the best there is as it actually DOES contain everything you need, but doesn't do itself justice. (I also think that the kit should include the tool for removing the stock stereo, just include them and increase the price by $5.

Summary: Works as you would expect a head unit conversion kit to.

Pros:
- Easy to install
- works as intended
- Includes all materials needed to complete head unit install

Cons:
- Feels cheap/Plastic is grainier than OE material and feels more "brittle/delicate".
- Must reuse some old hardware *Directions cover this*, although i'd prefer that if I spent $60+ dollars for something that it would include a couple of cheap small required pieces of hardware and a couple of wire nuts or something.

Tips: You don't NEED the Ford head unit removal keys to remove the original unit. Save yourself the $10-20.00 depending on where you are looking to perhaps purchase these from and use a wire coat hanger if you have one on hand. Just cut it into two sections and bend, use as you would the keys.

Get yourself some wire nuts, butt connectors or whatever you prefer to use to complete your install as these are not included in the kit.

Directions are pretty clear for the most part, however, your new stereo may install into this kit differently than the directions would suggest. I had to take the face plate that was included with the head unit and discard it as it would not fit with this kit. I just used the one included with the kit instead, although it wasn't as sleek looking and felt less durable. Additionally, you may not need all of the screws included as the holes in my stereo would not allow for all of them to be installed, this did not present a problem for me though.

You will be working from the front dash all of the way back to the trunk with this kit. Make sure you have a ratchet and sockets, torx bits and some drivers on hand, a flash light by no means hurts at all.
