Book Description

April 7, 2008 1405175672 978-1405175678 5
Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s Wear, first published in 1975, provides a straightforward introductory book for students beginning courses in flat pattern cutting.

This fifth edition continues to offer an introduction to the principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments.

New for this edition is the inclusion of colour to help students recognize the different sections of the book and to enhance the garment illustrations? Colour illustrations also offer a new dimension to the updated material on computer-aided design and the CAD chapter now provides students with a clear guide to the technology.

The size charts have been revised to reflect the changes in body sizing, the co-ordination with European size charts and to the way that clothes are now marketed to different sectors. The great expansion of casual wear has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting, and the section devoted to this type of cutting has been further expanded.

This best-selling textbook with its tried-and-tested presentation of authoritative text and clear diagrams remains the essential purchase for students of fashion and design.

Metric Pattern Cutting was first published in 1975 to provide a straightforward introductory book for students beginning courses in flat pattern cutting. The fourth edition continues to offer an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. The sections on computer-aided design and grading have been updated. The size charts of body measurements have been revised, reflecting the changing shape of women's bodies.. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Since the first edition of Metric Pattern Cutting was published in 1975 to provide a straightforward introduction to flat pattern cutting, it has become the established textbook on the subject.

The fourth edition continues to offer an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments. The original blocks and many of the pattern adaptations have therefore been retained. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of ‘flat cutting’ with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. The sections on computer-aided design and grading have been updated. The size charts of body measurements have been revised, reflecting the changing shape of women’s bodies. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love this Pattern Drafting book! November 29, 2009
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book having compared it to Helen Joseph Armstrong in the bookstore. I found it less bulky and easier to find patterns and ideas because the layout is more condensed and not spread over 500 pages. The amount of information in there is phenomenal. I have Dorothy Moore's Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking book as well, but I keep coming back to Aldrich! I drafted her skirt pattern and used pattern drafting principles in her book-and the skirt was the most perfectly form fitting 7-gored skirt I have ever made! I plan to get all of her books on Pattern Drafting. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because the diagrams aren't labeled Fig1, Fig2 etc-so sometimes I get confused as to which diagram the instructions refer to. But it is not an insurmountable difficulty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and usefull to make your own patterns December 15, 2012
Format:Hardcover
After using this book for some time, I can now recommend it gladly. It is a book for those who know how to sew, but need to get their patterns in magazines or other publications. With this book, if you are familiar with the metric sistem (to do this with inches and all its crazy partitions would be madness, i think) you will be able to take your own measures, and construct a whole range of different models that fit you just perfect. It is a method to learn how to draw the basic block patterns and then how to modify them to construct all the variations. All your basic wardrobe is there, including bodyshapers, bikinies, jeans, tracksuits, all kind of skirts and trousers, jersey and tailored dresses and jackets... well, it is really complete. I am so enthusiastic about this book I just bought the one for men's wear, to be able to construct the perfect pants for my husband. A must for any home dressmaker.

Addendum: I am working with the book and have found two big problems so far. There are two patterns with side panels which I cannot figure out, for the sake of me. One is the Semi-Fitted princess line dress, in page 116 (where do the side panels go???) and the other is the Fitted Casual Jacket (where do I draw the panel lines????) Maybe these references are somewhere in the book, but I have been going around and around and I cannot find where to draw these lines). If somebody knows, I would gladly listen!!!
