GOOD:

This game has some very good graphics and never crashed on me. I use an ATI 5770, and was a little worried because the game has that proprietary NVDIA PHYSX stuff, but you can disable it in the menu. I was able to get a consistent 50-60 FPS .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game...., July 26, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metro 2033 (DVD-ROM)
I read a of the reviews and was very skeptical. However, I am happy with the game and highly recommend it.

I go into every game without any pre-conceived notion of what I think they should be. Other reviewers whining about Stalker this... Fallout that... what a crock. Each game should stand on it's own and this one does. Sure it isn't perfect. I have only played a couple I thought were, so it's easy to want to set the bar to high. However, this is an extremely engrossing game. The graphics are awesome. Also, I guess if you are using an old Atari you might have problems running it. I am having no problem playing it on a 3 year old 2.3GHz dual core with 4GB Memory and a GTX280 card. I have the game set a step below the highest settings allowed on at 28" monitor at 1920x1200. The graphics on this are quite simply, very immersive and extremely well done. You really feel like you are in the subways.

Next, the complaints that it is linear are tiresome also. Some people like that style of play. Crysis is probably one of the best games ever made. However, it is very linear. Pesonally, I don't always want a game with a bunch of side missions that add little to the story, if only to make the game longer. Borderlands, Fallout3, Stalker, and games like Oblivion bored me to tears because of this, while others love that style of game. To each their own I say.

Lastly, everyone likes different things. When I was younger I like the games with big inventories, having to sleep to heal, collecting stuff, building levels and so forth. However, as I've gotten older I just want to play a great game. The simple FPS where you arm yourself and go to work kind of games are my choice now. I don't want to spend a week creating my charater and buidling up levels or over thinking what gun... what ammo, take the side quest, save the princess, where am I on the map... I just want to play. F.E.A.R., Crysis, COD4, FarCry, Half-Life, Bioshock to name a few are just like Metro. Your character is determined, your destination is linear, and there aren't lots and lots of choices, but it is engrossing and fun with just the right mix while keeping the game moving.

So, if you are looking for a game that is fun, looks great, and is worth buying... Metro 2033 is a pretty good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why Metro 2033 is a good gaming investment., July 14, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metro 2033 (DVD-ROM)
I've read a ton of reviews prior to purchasing the game, and so my expectations were quite unsure. The game is based off of a book (which I have not read), and you can kind of get that story-book feel in the game. I thought the game story was great. I've never seen graphics like this before, and the battle scenes and monsters are exciting. The monsters are great and the action is great. The downfall, in my opinion, is that the game is too linear. Personally, I would have liked to explore each underground town and return to each underground town whenever I wanted. Free exploration of the towns was a must, but the gamer is too restricted. The develops keep pushing you along (and that is unfortunate. It took a lot away from the game). Also, you can't lean around corners too shoot at enemies or to look for monsters. That is dumb. The AI could have also been better, but I've seen worse (Empire Total War for instance).

Overall, however, the adventure, the story, the thrill of the action, and the amazing graphics and world that has been developed, is well worth $40.00. I've already played it twice, once on each skill level, and now I'm going to play it on the hardest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immersive single-player experience., March 19, 2010

This is a really really fun single-player game, it's that simple. I bought my copy on Steam and was able to download/install it without any issues. Here are my machine specs:

eVGA GTX 260
4GB RAM
Windows Vista x64
Core2Quad Q6600

I can run the game at 1280x1024 on DX10 "very high" settings and it runs great. It is a BIT strange to not be able to tweak individual settings (you have to select "low, med, high..." etc, but it doesn't bug me that much.

If you were a fan of the really cool, atmospheric underground parts in Shadow of Chernobyl, you will love this game. It is a very immersive single-player experience. The character models are top-notch, the textures look great and the lighting and graphical effects are spot-on. The English dialogue is very good. I haven't finished the story yet, but so far it has been great as well.

I think you'll find that a lot of people complaining about this game will whine about it feeling like a console port, or they'll complain about Steam for some weird reason, but I had zero problems getting this game up and running, and I don't think my hardware is stellar.

Bottom line: If the game looks like fun to you and you're okay with the fact that it's a somewhat demanding game hardware wise and that there is no multiplayer, you will love this game. And remember, when you see a 1-star review of the game that doesn't actually talk about the game content itself...take it with a grain of salt :-).

Please ignore the whiner above, this game is beautiful. The visuals are dark and bleak and cause some very tense moments. I'm about 2 hours in and am loving it. keep in mind this is not Fallout 3, the game from what I have played has been very linear, but I like that. I would rather have a convincing story and tense moments of horror rather than a bunch of BS side missions only put in to lengthen gameplay. Give this game a chance you will be pleasantly surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, got it for FREE!, December 1, 2011
First off, I bought this game for $4.99 on Amazon and they sent me a promo code worth $5.00, redeemable in January. So the game cost me -1 cent.

The game is very good. Not brilliant but good. I was able to take the key and activate on Steam. I am not so sure why people are so against steam. I have never had a problem with steam, not on my old crappy laptop or my newly built gaming system.

Game 5/5
Price 10/5 (free is always epic)
Steam 5/5

I wish all the Steam haters would just complain about it elsewhere instead of giving an excellent game 1 star.
The game itself is excellent and I have run several games on steam for like 6 years now without a single problem.

It is rather linear but even so it gives you the feel of a very expansive game world.
It is a game where you have to actually THINK instead of just run & shoot a million rounds at everything that moves.
In Metro 2033 ammo is rather hard to come by in quantity so you have to conserve and make shots count, use stealth.
There are several parts of the game that are pretty tricky and will take a bit of strategy to get through it.
I just finished it about a hour ago.
The only thing I don't exactly care for in the game is the auto save, there are a few times in hard sections where if you die just before the auto save it will make you scream.
All in all though a very enjoyable game.
Anyone that gives this game under a 4 star either didn't play it or they aren't rating the game itself.

The graphics are very nice and I am playing on my 5+ year old PC I built with a Quad Q6600, Asus Maximus Formula MB, and an old Geforce 8800GT 512mb and 8Gb ram. Runs most everything on high and smooth as can be

I had a great time with this game. love the visuals, the atmosphere as well as the story line and last but not least, the music. All of the ingredients to a great game were there altough i would have liked a bit less linearity.
Also: WARNING TO CUSTOMERS: When playing this game, in the "advanced DX11 options" disable "advanced physics" as well as "Advanced DOF". These two features make absolutlely no difference in the game besides a huge drop in FPS.
(METRO 2033 GOOD ENDING OST): Great song

GOOD:

You play as a Russian dude who sets out to find help in order to save his local corner of the subway system. The underground atmosphere is dreary, but it works for this game. The game has some minor RPG elements like currency (in the form of ammunition, not cash), but it hardly ever matters. I was always able to find plenty of guns and ammunition lying on the ground or on dead bodies. As you travel through the various subway tunnels, nothing ever goes as planned of course, and you must kill or be killed. You enemies include fellow Russians gone bad (bandits), Germans (why they are there and would care about a post nuclear, destroyed subway.... the game never really explains), and monsters. The gun fights against the bandits and Germans are the highlight of the game. Your foes use cover very well, yell some funny things, and present a pretty cool challenge. The use of lighting really comes into play here as well. The dimly lit areas have candles and other lights around, which you can turn off to create mark darkness to confuse enemies.

BAD:

Monsters. I realize that many gamers are into these fantasy characters like monsters, but to me, they are just lame. In this game, you battle what looks like wolves with rabies, gorillas with fangs and balls of plasma. I guess all these freaks were created by the radiation which floods the area. So for as good as the gun fights are against humans, they are plain annoying going against these monsters which can absorb 30 double barrel shotgun shells to the head.

The other big negative for me is that your character has the jumping capability of a 400 pound white guy. There are some many things around that you think you should be able to climb or jump over, but the game does not let you. It really limits how creative you can be while traversing the levels.

SUMMARY:

The game is worth a play if you can get it for a good deal. I would never play all the way through again. However, I will probably play the levels again where you get to battle humans and stop when I get to the point where all you battle are monsters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Game I've Played Yet!!, December 27, 2010
I didn't download this through Amazon but bought it on Disc.
I'm playing it on a Windows 7 64bit system. No problem with install.

This game is Linear so you aren't wandering all over the place.
The graphics are awesome, at least on a high end system.

You really feel like you are in a story. It's a mix of FPS action and than
wandering and interacting with characters. There is all this atmosphere, voices in background,
sounds etc that make for a engrossing experience.

I'm not an experienced gamer, so far I've only played Crysis, Assassins Creed, The Witcher,
and of them all this one is just the most fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars get over it, April 21, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metro 2033 (DVD-ROM)
Good game but not really worth $50, maybe $30. The game introduces new elements and an alternative ending. In a saturated market it is becoming increasingly difficult for dev teams to introduce something "new"; my hat off to the team for trying.

The A.I. is dumb which made the game very easy. However, the monsters are difficult; therefore I did not play it on the hardest setting. The ammo factor -as mentioned by others- is not a problem if you learn how to get headshots and aren't trigger happy.

It was about a 15hr game for me, which is better than most games being released. Crysis 2 is going to have a lower graphics requirement (because of console support) and they are focusing on game content, not on looks. Unlike MW2 which was only an upgrade to the graphics of COD4, and Splinter Cell Conviction: both games are only 6 hour games.

So if you're looking for a rewarding single player game, this is a good buy, but you might want to wait for the price to drop 10-20 bucks.
