pure pop for now people,

Among so many of today's bands that lack dynamics, determination and over all fun, the debut from L.A's Metro Station succeeds in every way.
Having seen the band live, I am pleased to report THIS IS WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE! Got it? Good...i feel better too. Speaking of sound, it is difficult to pinpoint the synth-pop/pop-rock/rock-rock-and more-rock label as "EMO" becomes a vague cliché the same way "Trip-Hop" did in the 90's. Just listen and make up a cool new category later. A welcome surprise is how many songs feature elements from the band's original MySpace demos... no wonder they got the album out so soon (Hey look! Non-manufactured talent!). Talent...and yeah two band members are "not of drinking age" to quote numerous bios but they are not kids either. The album is paced very evenly (throw it on at your next party and see what happens) and by the closer "Disco", still feels fresh with adrenaline. Without irony i will say Metro Station rock and ROCK much better than any of y'know, most of those guys who can drink an' stuff.

Old school mixed with new school techno!,
By Diva2004 "Diva2004" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Metro Station (MP3 Download)
This is one of the best CDs that I own. They have a fresh sound that reminds me of old school electronica from my teens like Information Society yet with a modern twist. Yes, the lead singer is Miley Cyrus's brother but this is NOT teeny bopper stuff. Teens can relate to this music but bubblegum/Disney fodder it most definitely is not. It is modern, funky, danceable, and oh so sexy. I am 36 years old and get inspired by this music in a most profound way. I feel teens and adults can both connect to this fresh, exciting, and even transporting music. When I listen to it, I know I am definitely transported to a happier plane and my life seems better right away. Buy this and your mood will lift - guaranteed. Also the lead singer's vocals are very sexy, soulful, and right on point. I know you will enjoy this band as much as I do! Thanks to Open House Party where I first heard their music!

As a 29 year old, this is kind of embarrassing, but I LOVE this CD!! It is so much fun to listen to! It kind of reminds me of what the Cure would sound like if they were upbeat. I thought I might not "get" it or like it since I'm not a teenager and there are definitly lyrics about being a teen, but I still like it. If you like the "Shake, Shake" single, then get the album, it's all good!

amazing album!!,
This review is from: Metro Station (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after I fell in love with "Shake It," and was very surprised and happy to find that EVERY SINGLE TRACK is great!! It never slows down; every song is upbeat and catchy.
It's so rare these days for a band -- especially a new band -- to come up with an album that doesn't rely on filler tracks or whiny low-effort ballads, but Metro Station has done it and I am very grateful to finally be able to give the "skip" button on my car radio a rest. Every song on this CD is true to their sound, which is pretty unique and very addictive. It's energetic, clever, danceable, and just generally FUN music, and I can't wait to hear more from them!!

WOW... I'm in my first year of college and first semester my friend showed me some of their songs; "California", "Seventeen Forever" and "Kelsey". Those 3 songs really have come to represent a time in my life where all we did was party and do the crazy things 18 year olds do when their away from their perents. Needless to say, when Metro came out with their album, I immediately got it and LOVE every song! The odd thing is that I usually listen to rap & hip hop but every song on this cd speaks to me... It's SOOOO great. I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone, it's THAT GOOD!

I LOVE THAT SHAKE SONG. BY THE WAY AT THE AGE OF 51, I HAVE YOU ALL BEAT AT THE MOMENT. I AM NOT ASHAMED TO SAY I LOVE ALL THIS MUSIC!!!! I HEARD IT ON THE RADIO & ASK MY DAUGHTER AGE 31 ABOUT IT. SHE TOLD ME THE NAME OF THE BAND. I HAD TO CHECK THIS OUT. I LOVE ALL THE SONGS. IT IS A GREAT PICK ME UP WHILE DOING HOUSE WORK & DOING THE DISHES. I DON'T CARE WHAT THE AGE OR WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE AS LONG AS THE BEAT IS GREAT. AT MY AGE I'VE SEEN AND HEARD IT ALL. I LIKE THIS BAND AND I HOPE THEY DO MORE OF THE SAME. IF THEY DO I WILL PROBABLY BUY IT TOO. I GUESS THERE ARE DIFFERENT TASTES FOR EVERY ONE. I DO LIKE THE SOUND OF THIS MUSIC. AN OLD GRANNY WOMAN

Wow. I was not expecting this. At all.
I took a chance on this album after hearing one of their big hits, Shake It, on the local alt-radio station. I didn't really love it, but it was good to hear something I've had almost no exposure to (I'm just going to call it "digi-rock", and I recommend that you do as well). Usually when I take a chance like this, it turns out to be a good gamble (Mobile Estates, You Can't Stop The Bum Rush, Diesel and Dust, A Slight Case of Overbombing). There have been a few so-so albums, but nothing really disastrous. And then I got Metro Station, and it just about blew me away. I've never seen such a mixture of hot and cold, good and bad, great and terrible in a single album: ***** - The music. Part rock, part, er, "electronica" (ugh), part plain 'ol pop, part teenybopper, just a hint of angst...a little of everything. And it works: As Enya showed us repeatedly, put enough work on the technical side and even a mediocre song can sound great. This is just plain fun to listen and dance to, and I can easily play it from front to back. **** - Lively, energetic, cheerful. A winning combination any day, and pretty much the only thing preventing Shake It from getting annoying. These teens are living happy and proud of it. *** - Subject matter. Good overview of modern teen life, but doesn't really dig deep and plays it *really* safe with the lyrics. ("No, it's not about sex, it's about...er...getting dressed for a date!") Don't really care much either way about this. ** - Short, short, short. By far the least content I've ever seen in a commercially released album (and the other reason I can easily play it from front to back...sometimes it doesn't even last the work commute). There's nothing wrong with an occasional short track, but a complete inability to go beyond 3:20 points at a decided lack of creativity, or worse, sheer laziness. If they're going to have any success, they need to break out of this rut, and fast. * - TOO REPETITIVE! Shake It is the worst case, of course, but you hear the numbing repetitiveness here from beginning to end. Add in plenty of filler words ("Whooo-ooooa!"), and you're left with an entire album with hardly any substance. Metro Station looks to be in the same boat as Len was after You Can't Stop The Bum Rush. It's great to play around and have fun with the debut album, but unless they pick a viable commercial route, and fast, they're going to crash and burn. Club techno? They're going to have to figure out how to stretch a song to to 4, 5, and even 10 minutes. Mainstream pop? Better lyrics, more variety in the tempos and harmonies. Full-bore punk? They have to *get* angry. And so on. This is the first time I've ever actively hoped a band releases a second album...because this *can't* be it. C'mon, guys, what else ya got?

The Cars reincarnated in the 21st century,
By Alfredo "Pinoy" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Metro Station (Audio CD)
I am 40 years old and totally enjoyed Metro Station's debut CD for two reasons. First is that they sound like one of my favorite band The Cars. Second is the Filipino drummer Anthony Improgo. Pinoys rock too! There is so post about Trace Cyrus. I dont consider him the lead singer. Mason Musso is the lead because he can sing the high notes. Trace does the whispering long notes. However, both voices complement each other which is a unique combo that usually doesnt work. Anyone who grew up on 80s music will enjoy the album's nostalgic beat. When I first got the CD, I actually thought that "Shake It" was the worst song in the album. If that is the worst, imagine how good the rest of the album is. I was surprised to hear it on the radio as the first single.

Are you Serious??,
This review is from: Metro Station (Audio CD)
This is serious guilty pleasure territory. After seeing the video I couldn't believe my eyes. They look like the obnoxious "emo" kids from high school. For all intents and purposes they should be playing horribly generic metal and/or acoustic tear jerkers, not making the some of the catchiest Electro-pop this side of the Killers. This sounds like the fun/beat of New Order meets the teenage drama of The Cure translated through the eyes of kids whom, if played New Order to, would probably think it was a Postal Service rip-off.
If they're serious, they lucked out and found the perfect mix of pubesent angst and earnest. If they're a joke, there the greatest thing since Kaufman.

from the band Metro Station. I love the song "Shake It" among others on their debut cd.
It's fun to listen to, full of energy and has a nice selection of songs throughout that will have you bobbing your head along to the individual tracks. Its great to see a band come out and put out a cd that is easy on the ears and doesn't take itself too seriously. It sounds like they had fun making this cd and i hope to check out more from them in the future. A nice up and coming band, Metro Station is sure to be around for more than awhile. Nice pickup and for a pretty decent price as well. |
