5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, January 12, 2004

I bought this item because I hated the struggle in trying to get the cork out of a champagne bottle. It works great. I came back and bought a couple more for gifts. The packaging is also very nice.

Very heavy, good metal, and smooth operation. Comes in a stylish case. Complete control for popping bottles. No more guests covering their eyes on New Years. Machine grey finish on the outside.
Would make a great gift for under $20.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why didn't I find this 5 years ago, July 15, 2009
This review is from: Metrokane Velvet Champagne Pliers (Kitchen)
We've been enjoying a lot of champagne, and my husband kept an ugly toolbox pliers handy to struggle with opening the cork. Now he marvels every time he opens a bottle with these champagne pliers. Better yet, when I gave a lab party, I took the Metrokane Velvet Champagne Pliers in, having never used them. Before a large group I easily opened the cork perfectly. This opener made me look like I knew what I was doing.

Although accused of being a "sissy" at our New Years' Eve party, everyone who opened the next champagne bottle went straight for the champagne opener! I am so glad I had ordered it before the party!!

This set of "pliers," perfectly formed to grasp a champagne stopper, eliminates the stopper landing in someone's eye or breaking something. I remember a flying cork making a dent in our ceiling one time, and more serious near-misses, before I got this. Another advantage is that it is easy for a woman--or man who doesn't want to have to wrestle with the stopper-- to open a champagne bottle with this; even though I lift (light) weights, I still used to find myself handing off champagne bottles to the nearest strong male. No more!

5.0 out of 5 stars So easy!!!, August 7, 2011

I love champagne, drink it often, not just special occaisons, but usually have to have my hubby open it. Since he refuses to open it right, we frequently end up with broken corks that I then have to attack with a regular corkscrew; so it is ugly and ends in frustratuion. I saw these when shopping for a houdini as a gift. I though if they work half as well as the houdini (which I love) they would be well worth it. They do, I have tried on 4 different kinds of champagne now and opened them all myself, with little effort. Works like a dream, wish I had them years ago.

These champagne pliers are absolutely fantastic! They are beautiful and make opening a bottle of champagne so easy and fast you can't believe it. Great buy, well worth the money. I'm picking up a couple more to give as gifts. I notice they're almost out of stock. Hope Amazon keeps carrying them!

After using the Pinzon Champagne Opener for a few years and giving several away, I misplaced mine during a move. In desperation, I bought this Metrokane opener and it is even easier for me to use. My hands have gotten a bit worse since buying the Pinzon (rheumatoid arthritis), so tools like this are a must for me.

Unlike the Pinzon, which pinches the cork, this opener sits around the top of the cork and then grabs. There is no way to mis-pinch, and because there is a bit of coverage at the top end of the cork, it really cannot fly out and get away from you even if you loosen your grip a little bit. With the Pinzon, I always put a cloth over the bottle, just in case. I don't have to do that with the Metrokane.

As the Pinzon is not available, I highly recommend this opener. Easier, just as well made and a great price - you can't go wrong.
