Great looking, great idea...but...,

This is a great idea product, nice materials, but...
I got one and after just a few uses the flip top stuck open and would not close again. I contacted the company, told them of my issue and they were very responsive; quick, friendly, etc. They sent me another shaker free of charge. Unfortunately, as I was showing someone how cool this product was, one finger flip open...it stuck again. It is like a hyper-extended joint that locks up. And won't close again. The shaker strains very slowly as well. The hole on the underside of the strainer lid is pretty small. Not a huge complaint, but bothersome. Anyway, I really want to like this product but the kinks make it unusable.

very nice item, but beware...,

I absolutely love the concept of this product, so I purchased one. I was just testing it out with water, and it leaked all over the place. I was really disappointed, but not ready to give up on it. I secured the lid again, and pushed a little harder on the locking side of the lid. This did the trick! It can seem that the top is fully locked in when it may not be. There is a little bit of resistance, but this is what locks the lid closed. I shook again, and it did not leak at all! Looking forward to using this to do more than just shake water!

Yep, just as other reviewers have noted, my shaker leaked like mad. Note the past tense - "leaked' - now the flip top has locked in the open position and refuses to budge. A mason jar works better than this gizmo. Save your money!

Metrokane Flip-Top Cocktail Shaker with Built-In Strainer I really wanted this to work. It was highly rated by America's Test Kitchen. It had features I was looking for, the sealing gasket, double wall, dishwasher safe, stainless, no little shaker cap to pop off and skitter across the floor. I read the negative reviews and was concerned about reports of the lid locking in open or closed position, so I found one in a store and opened it and flipped the lid a few times to make sure it worked. With a product with so many bad reviews, I chose to purchase the item there for ease of returning it. While I was washing it before its first use, the lid locked open and I could not get it closed. See video. I'm taking it back today. Cocktail time is not the time for fighting with equipment.

It is not very often that I feel compelled to write a review on a product, but I just received one of these & love it. I used a Boston shaker for years (because that's what I owned), with a cocktail strainer, but it was messy. This really was leak & spill proof (for my 94 proof). I was wondering why no one has thought of this before. Good job Metrokane!

I love the concept of this shaker, however, the previous reviews about leaking are true. No matter how securely I closed the lid, it still leaked all over the place. What a waste of Grey Goose! It only leaks around the flip-top part, but that is enough to lose a lot of liquor and render this shaker useless.

I absolutely love this shaker. The lid and flip top lock in place - I haven't had any issues with leaking. The shaker is insulated which means your hands don't freeze and there is no condensation build up. The built-in strainer eliminates the need to dirty any additional dishes - it's a very well made product that makes mixing drinks a breeze.

Favorite shaker for chilling libations!,

I've had this shaker for about six months now and only had good experiences. Because the lid is plastic, I do not put that part of it in the dishwasher. To me dishwashers wreak havoc on all plastics, even if they say dw safe. It could be a key to my success with this one.
THE GOOD: * The lid is plastic and not stainless steel. When a two piece stainless steel shaker gets stuck together from the cold, it is difficult/ almost impossible to get them apart. This shaker doesn't have that problem. The plastic top with the stainless steel bottom is perfect. * You have to give it an extra hard click to get the straining part shut. (Still one thumb though) It gives me confidence that it is really closed. * I can shake it really well and I've had no fears of it leaking. * The threading to put the top on the base is in alignment, so it doesn't give me any trouble putting the lid on. * It only has two parts, the lid and the base. - No need for extra pieces, a drink strainer etc. * The base is stainless steel and thick for a nice chilling effect withour freezing your hand off. (Other shaker materials like glass or plastic don't chill as quickly or as well and just melt your ice) * It Mixes two good sized martinis at once. THE TRICKY: * The lid can be a little tricky to clean, especially if you have citrus bits in it. It has a unique strainer design. I drop some soap in it though and put it under high pressure water at all angles to get the inside and the strainer part clean. * The harder click to snap the strainer lid closed is a plus for me, but if one wasn't expecting to have to do that, it would defintely be tricky as your drink will leak out if not closed all the way. * The drink doesn't pour out of the strainer as quickly as it does with the old fashioned strainer, but I'm used to it now. This has now become my new hostess gift.

Loved This Shaker,

This is the first truly leak proof cocktail shaker I have found. Not only is it well sealed, but it is virtually one hand operation. Just shake up your mixture, and with the same hand you are holding it with, push down and the top flips up for easy pouring. The built in strainer is a great added feature and makes it easy to use with no added tools needed!

The ads and promo video really made me think that this shaker would solve my very personal problems with traditional shakers:
1. The little top on a traditional shaker has a tendency to get stuck. 2. It takes a long time to pour from a tradtional shaker (unless you take the top off and use one of those strainer thingies). 3. If you really care about making a decent drink, your hands are going to be stuck to the shaker before it really gets cold enough. On the other hand, you can pretty much put all of the parts of any sort of old-style shaker in the dishwasher and have it all clean up without need of a degree in fluid dynamics. So: The top on this thing flips up and down. Cool. But it doesn't really solve the pouring problem. (Incidentally, I tried changing from icemaker to ice tray to see if it would help. You would too if you lived in Washington State, where liquor taxes have just gone up again.) Even worse, positioning the top in a dishwasher is very tricky. It wants to trap liquid inside its little nooks and crannies. Even though I think I've worked out how to get it to drain out most of the rinse water, I still feel the need to run it under the tap. Bottom line is that it solves the problem in #1, is no help with #2, and does help with #3 if you have sensitive hands. I'm probably going to buy a strainer and go back to something slightly less complicated. |
