Metrokane Houdini Decanter with Wine Shower Funnel and Sediment Strainer

I purchased two of these as Christmas presents; one for a son that is into quality wines and another for myself and my wife. I have done a number of tests, where I open a bottle of red wine and pour some directly into one glass and then pour the remainder of the bottle into the houdini decanter through the funnel/strainer. Then I pour some from the decanter into a second glass. The difference in taste is amazing.

I highly recommend the funnel-decanting process to everyone as a way of improving the flavor and taste of red wines.

Now for the downsides. The houdini decanter works great at improving taste, but it is really hard to clean and hard to store. I end up hand washing it and balancing it upside down on a kitchen towel between a number of things to aid in the drying. Then I have to find a special place to store the decanter, as it takes up a lot of room.

If I were to do this over again, I will look for a decanter that probably doesn't have as broad a base and has some kind of cap to it so that it can store wine for the next night.

Still, I use this decanter-strainer combination most weeks and am really glad I purchased it. My son also love the one we got for him. As a result it was worth it, as it makes a $5-$12 bottle of red wine taste like a much more expensive bottle of wine.

The decanter works as intended and its very nice. As for drying, I didnt like some of the comments and was worried about how i was going to dry it. My solution was to invert it into a $2 64oz glass beer stein I have (I think from Target). The stein is heavy and stable and the neck of the decanter doesnt reach all the way to the bottom while the mouth of the stein holds the base of the decanter. Plus they are both in my bar at home, so no unncessary unitaskers. There are a lot of things around the house that will accomplish the same thing - a vase maybe?

I initially didn't want the screen and aerator. I'm sure glad I changed my mind! The screen catches sediment and wayward bits of cork that you wouldn't want to consume. The carafe is solid and more than accommodating to a 750 mil bottle of wine. A reasonable price as well. Overall a very worthwhile item from Amazon.com - my favorite on-line store!

I know this sounds very cheesy but we actually did a wine tasting after having used the decanter and the filter. Each and every person chose the wine that was used from this product. I would buy this again if I ever needed another one.

This decanter with its shower funnel really gives you a good look at the color of your wine, while aerating it thoroughly right out of the bottle. A small filter screen keeps cork bits out of the wine if you have a lot of old bottles.

This item looks expensive. It works great and the wine really does flow all around the bottle as it is poured like in the picture. A really great purchase.

Overall a nice inexpensive decanter. The strainer is nice but the glass is a little cloudy. If you want to just use this for serving it is fine but if you want to leave the decanter out for display I would recommend buying a more expensive one.

We bought this as a gift for my brother in-law who is a big fan of red wines. When we bought it I was just thinking it would be a classy and attractive addition to his wine cabinet. However, we visited their house shortly after and they served us a 16yr old vintage of wine but when opening it the cork split into pieces. He just poured it into the decanter and attached the filter to the top and the wine poured without any trace of the cork in it. What a great idea to include a sediment filter with the decanter. I would recommend this for that reason alone, but it is still a very attractive addition to any wine serving collection. Lastly the glass seems to be of a good thickness so I suspect it will resist breaking better than some other cheaper decanters. A great product for the money.

What can one really say about a wine decanter - i mean - it's a wine decanter... I will say that the Houdini crystal wine decanter is elegant and simple in its design, is the perfect size, comes with a a neat "wine strainer/shower" funnel that is fun to use and impressive to friends when used while sitting around talking with friends and/or clients and etc. It is such a neat little contraption that is so fun to use that the wine - whether real or imagined - does in fact seem to taste better & more vibrant... finis.. RRR

It's amazing how much you'll use a decanter once you have a decent one at hand. This set is well worth the money. The only thing I wish it had was a stopper.
