2.0 out of 5 stars It works if you have the right bottle.
This product would be a great product as it actually decants the wine. The problem is a poor design. First, it drips down the bottle. Why can't the do it like a non-drip teapot spout. Second, and this is major (I found this out the hard way). Not all bottles are made equal. Some bottle openings are just a hair larger than what this insert is designed for. You insert the...

Metrokane's Rabbit Wine Aerating Pourer is one that does, based on our family's experience. We've found it greatly improves the taste and drinkability of freshly opened red wines without having to decant them from the bottle, while at the same time being functional and easy to use. As an added bonus, clean up is a snap! We tried it out with members of our gourmet group and it garnered kudos from all concerned. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars great novelty gift for wine lovers, December 10, 2009
This review is from: Metrokane Rabbit Wine Aerating Pourer (Kitchen)
After my boyfriend and I attended our first wine tasting/ guided tour, we learned that after opening a bottle of wine, it's best to let it breathe for a while.

The rabbit aerator allows us to enjoy a newly opened bottle of wine immediately, rather than waiting for it to breathe.

We tested the aerator on both a red and a white wine and we could definitely tell the difference. (Although technically I think they make separate aerators for whites and reds.)

The aerated wine was very smooth with little to no acidic finish. The non-aerated wine was quite a bit harsher with an acidic finish. The flavors and scents were noticeably different as well.

It was fun to do our own at-home taste test, and we will definitely use this when we have friends over for a party.

Please note: I was personally concerned about the aerator leaking, not fitting the bottle, or being difficult to remove. I was pleasantly surprised to find that none of these were a problem.

Great product, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars much better than vinturi, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Metrokane Rabbit Wine Aerating Pourer (Kitchen)
I used to own a Vinturi but threw it out because it started to have a harsh plastic-type smell. So i bought the metrokane aerator, which is $10 cheaper and much better because you don't need 2 hands. I would recommend this aerator over the Vinturi.

Second, and this is major (I found this out the hard way). Not all bottles are made equal. Some bottle openings are just a hair larger than what this insert is designed for. You insert the unit and it seems ok, but when you start to pour, the unit falls out and you have wine all over the place. The unit works with some bottles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rabbit Aerating Pourer, December 3, 2009

I purchased this pourer recently to quickly aerate every-day wine. For high-quality wines and/or more formal dinners, I continue to use a decanter, but to help with everyday-quality wine (< $20/bottle), as well as everyday use, I find this aerator helps. I've owned the item for only a few weeks, but I find it to be reasonably durable. I simply rinse it with hot water (I never use soap in any type of decanter). Previously I had purchased a bulb-type of aerator, but I broke it not one day after I began using it. I think that $30 is a bit high for something like this, but if it does hold up, I think it's a worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great when aeration is needed, but don't use automatically!, April 28, 2010

After being pleasantly surprised at the markedly improved taste of the wine tested, I purchased several of these for Christmas gifts. Everyone has enjoyed their use, and I would continue to recommend the product. I would like to point out though, that all wines do not benefit from this type of aeration. When purchasing a bottle recently, the sommelier suggested the aerator not be used on the wine being purchased. Having been so happy with the results in the past, I decided to taste test, pouring a little straight from the bottle and in another glass, a small amount aerated. The sommelier was correct. This wine tasted best straight from the bottle or decanted, when aerated, too much air was introduced and the wine tasted raisiny. The wine merchant I rely on for special or holiday purchases, prefers decanting when possible. So for excellent quality red wines I decant, but for all others I do the taste test and pour accordingly.

The wine aerating pourer is a device that lets flow wine over a larger surface under the inclusion of air. This way the wine is aerated instantly, to the same effect then pouring it in a caraffe and let it stand for an hour. The different taste compared to direct pouring is detectable even for an untrained tongue. The wine gets instantly more mellow and balanced, especially if the tannin content is high.
The device consists of two pieces which can be easily detached and cleaned and fits all wine bottles. It does not replace a caraffe for festive occasions but as an instant improvement for the casual bottle of wine it is an excellent idea.

Tried the aerator over the holidays, seems to give the red wine a better, fresher taste? my opinion. Pours well and doesn't drip.

We gave this as a gift and were pleasantly surprised at the improvement to the wine. The essential quality for us is the ease of use. Because it fits on the end of the bottle there are no spills or dripping. Easy to clean up. Bought one for ourselves!

Thought this was a gadget and after all, who doesn't like gadgets. Turns out to be more. Blind taste tests confirm wine (red, at different price points) poured through the aerator is judeged better tasting. Go figure.
