Book Description

June 1975
This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1880. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... Delivered On Thursday Evening, Mat 22nd, 1879, By C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. "And, behold, there was a man which had hia hand withered .... Then aaith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like aa the other."--Matthew xii. 10, 18. Note well the expression. Jesus "went into their synagogue; and, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered." A mark is set, as it were, in the margin, as if it were a notable fact. That word " beheld" in a sort of note of exclamation to draw attention to it. "Behold, there was a man which had his hand withered." In many congregations, if there should step in some one of the great and mighty of the land, people would say, "Behold, there was a duke, an earl, or a bishop there." But although there were some great ones occasionally in our Saviour's congregation, I find no notes of admiration about their presence, no "beholds" inserted by the evangelists as if to call attention to their appearance. No doubt if there were in a congregation some person of known intelligence and great learning, who had earned to himself a high degree, there are persons who would say, "Do you know that Professor Science or Doctor Classic was present at the service?" There would be a "behold" put to that in the memories of many. There were persons well learned, according to the learning of the day, who came to listen to Christ, but there arc no "beholds" put about their having been present. Yet in the synagogue there was a poor man whose hand had been withered, and we are called upon to note the fact. It was his right hand which was withered, the worse of the two for him, for he could scarcely follow his handicraft or earn his bread. His best hand was useless, his ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Spurgeon's finest!, October 3, 2001

(REAL NAME)
Many books are published these days with the name "Spurgeon" on them. However, so many of these books are edited down adaptations of something Spurgeon wrote or preached. Too often these "books" are actually 3 or 4 sermons cut apart and taped together into a book format. The unfortunate result is that much of Spurgeon's beliefs, exhortations, and theology are lost, and all that remains is his poetic style. Few publishers have remained true to the real Spurgeon, instead using his name to sell books and make money. Their finished product is watered-down milk, psychology at best, instead of the real meat of the real Spurgeon's preaching.

This book, however, is the REAL Spurgeon! This is a collection of over 50 of his sermons, the REAL unedited sermons, and many more expositions of Scripture as they were published in 1892. Read this book and hear the meat of Spurgeon, the depth and conviction with which he preached, and the consistency with which his theology rests upon Scripture.

And these sermons are not just historical pieces; they are useful to us even today! No Christian can read this book and not find his soul challenged, uplifted, convicted, and educated in knowledge and wisdom. The Victorian Londoners found Spurgeon's ministry to be all these things, and since that time it has had its effect on so many others, too - and it can have that effect on you!

This book is published by Banner of Truth, one of the greatest publishing houses of our day. Their faithfulness to truth is an example to the publishers who just seek to publish what will sell.

This book is a great shelf volume, well-bound and durable. Read it every day, and it will still wear well.

Perhaps you've heard the new Spurgeon, the one created by so many modern publishers and editors. If you want to know what his sermons were REALLY like, and if you want your soul to be taught and ministered to by the "Prince of Preachers" himself, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where to find Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Series and other Spurgeon books, March 21, 2006
Since Amazon doesn't appear to currently carry these volumes, I'm posting this information on where to find new copies.

Pilgrim Publications currently publishes new reprints of the entire Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit series, New Park Street Pulpit series, Sword and Trowel series, and most other Spurgeon books.

You can buy them from various places, including Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service (a large Reformed bookseller), who has most of them in stock.
