The trend of metrosexuality has exploded within the last couple of years. This little handbook from Michael Flocker is hoping to help you jump on the bandwagon! The book has 12 sections: Introduction, Etiquette, Wine, Dining, Art/Culture, Music/Books/Film, Fashion/Style, Grooming, Body/Fitness, Sex/Romance, Home Decorating, and Metrosexual Mindset. There are many reasons why you might enjoy this book. First the layout is fantastic because in each chapter are subsections which give you an overview and then zero on in with the details in bullet points. Also the book has some new and interesting tidbits that you may have never thought of which can help give you an 'edge' to just the plain metrosexual. The information is fun to read and enlightening. I learned for example that the new desirable body image is a leaner toned body rather than the muscular beefcake. Also it tells you how to do the european air kiss and seduce someone. If you'd like to read about those things as well as the general stuff like what fashions you should always avoid and how to order wines in a resturant then this is the book for you. The one downside is the book may be TOO simple for those metrosexuals who all ready have it all down and were looking for much finer details than the book has. Recommended for people new to the whole thing, not recommended for those who are looking for an all comprehensive guide.

Consider this: metrosexuality is really nothing new. Stated in the most simplistic manner, metrosexuality is no more than a polite man who understands how to dress and appreciates the finer things in life. In a nutshell, a metrosexual is what used to be known as a gentleman. The term gentleman may not be politically correct or interesting enough to sell books in a day when the new straight is gay. So to sell this lifestyle book, the author has capitalized on the latest social trend.

In general this is a hip and fun book. I'd recommend it for the young man whose upbringing didn't include, for example, exposure to manners, tipping, wine selection, or dress. In general, this is a `how to' lifestyle guide for dummies. It isn't a serious guide to style. So, if you are serious there are far better style books or magazines to buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing really new here..., November 25, 2003
This review is from: The Metrosexual Guide To Style: A Handbook For The Modern Man (Paperback)
There's not much in here that you won't find in the various Esquire guides, or in the much better _The Modern Gentleman_. But still some good advice. I'd say if you want a *complete* library of men's style books, then pick this up. Otherwise, give it a pass.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have...., November 3, 2004

Ever wondered about which wine goes with which dinner? Or about the best way to introduce yourself? How about etiquette and chivalry? Need to know which colors go together and what girls interpret as "good signs" or "bad signs"? Then the Metrosexual Guide to Style is for you! Not just for the budding metrosexual, this book should be read by every teen boy in the country because it gives you EXTREMELY valuable information on how to behave in public, at formal dinners, what "Black Tie", "White Tie", et al. mean, plus it tells you what the best ways are to treat a lady and not make an ass of yourself on a date or at social functions!
Of course the book has all the normal trimmings that you'd expect: haircare, grooming, fashion, what your drink of choice says about you, and all that other superficial stuff that semi-gay men know and us straight brutes are clueless to, but the book will ABSOLUTELY SURPRISE YOU with its advice and knowledge of social behaviors at high end estabilishments and fancy events. Every teenage boy who starts dating/going to dances/attending events should read this book as it will keep you from embarassing yourself for years to come! And for us 21+ crowd it gives refreshing insights and knowledge on things most guys in their 40's don't know!
This book is a must have, go Used if you can, but GET THIS BOOK!

2.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but..., November 17, 2005

This book is full of useful advice, but do not mistake it for instruction on how to become a gentleman. Despite what one would think, I have come to appreciate this term "Metrosexual" as it distinguishes those who use manners and the appearance of urbane sophistication for their own self-advancement from true gentlemen. True gentlemen show respect for themselves and others, bringing the light of civilization to a darkening world, and leaving society better for their efforts. A gentleman's manners, urbanity and consideration are a lifestyle, not a mask that is donned for selfish convenience.

Thus, if one is seeking to become a metrosexual, this book fits the bill. If one wants to be a gentleman, keep shopping.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that changed my life!, December 14, 2004
This review is from: The Metrosexual Guide To Style: A Handbook For The Modern Man (Paperback)
Always changing I was trying to find myself, my style, and my being. Well I finally found it when I first read this fine piece of work! I feel that I am a new man since I have read this book. It has made me feel more mature and more like a gentlemen now. I learned about having good etiquette and what manners I should have when going to restaurants. I learned all about wines and how to order wines. This book has taught me how to treat a girl and how to dress professionally. I never thought I could do such good things until I read this book. After reading this book I am now a more thoughtful and caring person. I am more thoughtful of what other people think of me, and I am more caring about my appearance and my behavior. The book claims that it could change your life and change the way you think and it has for me! So if you are looking to make you life more productive, organized, happy, and well admired then this is the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guys, good manners help you get laid!, December 16, 2003

If it were up to me, I'd make this book a mandatory read for all men! Gentlemen, to get your attention - you read this book, your chance of getting laid will increase by that much!!!

And I'm not kidding, I'm speaking as a woman who's being on disastrous dates, where men didn't know how to dress or groom themselves, or how to eat properly, or how to read the vibe from their date. This little handbook will give you almost all the tips you need to know before going on a date. Of course it really covers more than JUST that, but I hardly think any man cares to improve themselves in anyway if that doesn't help with his chance of getting sex. The book touches on books, arts, music, grooming, dressing, romance and sex, etc.

It's fun to read too.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, June 21, 2004
This review is from: The Metrosexual Guide To Style: A Handbook For The Modern Man (Paperback)
I grew up lower middle class without a father. I am 25 and have worked hard to become somewhat successful in my practice. I spend atleast ten bucks on lunch everyday. If this book makes you twenty dollars(or better yet gets you laid), due to some confidence you got from this reading, you just got 100% return (or more) on your investment. Take it for what it is...an introduction to style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read it over coffee, March 7, 2004
This review is from: The Metrosexual Guide To Style: A Handbook For The Modern Man (Paperback)
This thin volume has some good information on being the so-called "modern man." It's concise enough that you can read it from cover to cover over a cup of mocha or two in your local bookstore. I doubt it's worth buying and keeping, but you may want a quick reference down the road.

The book presents short chapters on various apsects in a man's everyday life, from social etiquette to wardrobe to room decoration to music collection. You have to remember, this is one pretentious guy's version of how *you* should live. Whether single or committed, you should be the one deciding how you should live. (Of course, within the limits of legality and ethics.) You are already a grown-up, and you don't need others to tell you how you should behave.

That said, the book does have some interesting tips such as how to pick out a wine at a restaurant and how to act like an old-fashioned gentleman... or how to act "gayish" to attract other people's attention, be it from men or women. It's sprinkled with humor, but it has two major problems that prompt me to recommend reading it over coffee rather than buying it:

1) there's a number of inaccuracies, and a lot of coverage is very superficial and incomplete

2) they use a 9-point font which to me seems more like a 7-point font, which means it's very difficult to read unless you have 20/40 vision (or vision temporarily improved by a white chocolate mocha or something else more stimulating).

In a nutshell, this small book can give you some interesting ideas about how to become a "metrosexual" man. Whether that's what you want is up to you.
