The portability of this flash is far superior to Nikon's own macrophotography flash unit, which has two flash heads and an annular mounting bracket. The Metz 15MS-1 consists of a compact lightweight ring that screws onto the lens. No wires, no separate battery pack, no separate flash heads. Embedded in the ring are two flash units, one on either side, that can be rotated so that they align horizontally or vertically, or any angle between. They can be aimed near or far. A ring-shaped diffuser covers both these units, to give shadowless light, emulating a ring flash. The diffuser can be removed, exposing each of the two flash units, which now give point-source illumination for high contrast and sharp definition. The output of the two flashes can be adjusted independently, allowing gradual filling in of shadows, all the while exposing the image perfectly under the control of the camera's own TTL metering system. The buttons controlling these adjustments are simple and intuitive. I photograph moths at night, and the built-in illuminator allows me to see my subjects and focus on them. In the past, I had to juggle camera, flash, and flashlight.

The intensity of the flash is sufficient for shooting hand-held with a 105 mm macro lens at 1:1 magnification at f40, for maximum depth of field. The flash eliminates blurring due to camera shake or subject movement. The compactness of the flash frees me to position the camera at odd angles unimpeded by the flash unit bumping into objects nearby.

I have been operating this unit with a Nikon D 800 in commander mode for the past year, and it has served me flawlessly. I set the camera to manual, set the shutter speed to 1/250, and adjust focus by moving the camera. I turn off the lens' auto focus and anti-vibration function.

A couple months ago I got a macro lens and haven't been used it much since it was very hard to take a decent picture without having a proper light. Your regular flash, doesn't matter if it's big or small won't work well for macro since it's positioned quite high and the light direction is straight (you can tilt it up, but not down), plus it will light up your subject from one side only.
This flash solves all macro problems: adjustable power balance between two flashes, perfectly working TTL, not bulky, no wires at all. You can also change angle of the flashes if your subject is very close and eliminate light spill to keep background completely black. The build quality is superb. All you need to get the flash working is either integrated camera flash or a smallest flash you can find for your camera. The menu is very intuitive and clear, it took a few minutes to get the flash up and running on my Sony A7r.
Compared to an LED ring, the flash allows you to truly freeze your subject, you won't ever need a tripod. I shoot handheld f/22 or f/32, 1/160s (A7r flash sync limit), ISO 100 and it works great! My lens is Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro.
It's quite sad such a great flash can't be mounted on Sigma 180mm f/2.8 macro, one of the best macro lenses available right now since it requires 86mm filters. Anyway the flash is fantastic.
Thanks team Metz for delivering another great product!

I needed something to assist with lighting while shooting macro subjects. Since oftentimes you'll be shooting at very small apertures (high F-number), you'll need more light. I'm using this on an Olympus 60mm macro lens (will require a step-up ring adapter separately) and the snap-on mechanism makes it easy to take on/off. This is especially important with this lens since it's a small micro 4/3s lens. Weight doesn't seem to be an issue even with the two AAA batteries installed.

This will work with wireless control as a "slave" but I'm using it with the included cable (I didn't know it came with one, so I have a spare cable as well) for manual control since I don't keep the tiny bundled Olympus flash mounted all the time.

There are ways to angle the lights and a built-in diffuser that helps keep the lighting a bit more even. You can also individually control the power of each light (left/right) as well as use a built-in modeling light to illuminate the scene while getting setup.

Lastly, there's a USB port allowing you to connect it to your PC and upgrade the firmware.

Overall a great purchase for those interested in shooting macro (especially moving subjects!) without using a bulky flash, off-camera flash, and/or flash with snoot, etc.

I spent a considerable amount of time looking at the various LED "ring flashes" that weren't really ring flashes. This one is not either, in the literal sense. It is a ring that mounts to the end of the lens with an adapter. It has two flash small flash units 180 apart. The ring is self-contained using 2 AAA batteries and can be setup to fire with a cord or cordless using the cameras IR signal. Took me a few minutes to setup and have the unit 'learn' the IR for my camera. Used it extensively last night and this morning and fires every time. Has a 'modeling' light that can be turned on to assist focus in a dark environment.

Flash is adjustable, like most remote flashes and will power in scales of full, 1/2, 1/4, etc. At full power I can shoot an extremely close macro using 90mm lens and 3 extension tubes at ISO 100, f/32, and 1/200. That's a lot of light and eliminates the trouble I've been having with light angle.

It is what I needed for tight macro work. Satisfied and would recommend to someone wanting a true flash and a lot of light power and not just a ring with some LED's affixed to it.
