5.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack and great album, September 20, 2005

Wonderful album; DVD also available on Amazon is even better. So many great parts it's hard to know where to start. How about Elton Medeiros playing the 'caixa de fosforos' (matchbox), a one-man percussion session ? Carinhoso, for sure; but also the work with Velha Guarda de Portela is genuine and profound. The voices may go as they get older, but the sense of timing just gets better. Great old sambistas may only be able to suggest the outlines of the melody, but the musicality is 10000% there . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, April 29, 2005
This review is from: Meu Tempo E Hoje (Audio CD)
I picked this album while visiting Rio. I could not be happier with my purchase. The rendition of Carinhoso by Marisa Monte is beuatiful. The only criticism I would have of the CD is that the complete version of "Argumento" was not included in it.

This CD is the soundtrack of the documentary with the same title. I regret no having looked for the DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous acoustic music from Brazil, May 30, 2004
This review is from: Meu Tempo E Hoje (Audio CD)
Absolutely delightful. The son of a well-known Brazilian samba player from the pre-bossa nova era, in the 1960s Paulinho Da Viola became one of the foremost proponents of a resurgent movement back towards the old-fashioned acoustic music of the 1920s, '30s and '40s, and is one of Brazil's most highly regarded traditionally-oriented musicians.

This is a relaxed, informal set that highlights Da Viola in a variety of styles, and also serves as the sondtrack for a documentary film about his life and work. Da Viola's approach is alternately stately and refreshingly offhand, with some songs summoning tremendous elegance and others, like a few tunes with the somewhat rough hewn Velha Guarda Da Portela, that let the rough sides show. Other guests include fellow sambistas Zeca Pagodinho and Elton Medeiros as well as pop singer Marisa Monte, who beautifully croons a version of the old Pixinguinha standard, "Carinhoso," an album highlight, but one which in no way overshadows the rest of this fine, fine album. Da Viola remains, indisputably, one of the great masters of Brazilian acoustic music. Another highly recommended album!
