Terrific!

A definite deserted island CD!!,

This is without a doubt one of my top ten favorite CDs of all time, and I listen to everything from Johnny Cash to Paul Oakenfold to Seal to the Beatles to Edith Piaff. This CD, as I understand from my time in Brasil, was written during Chico's exile from Brasil and expresses indirectly his dissatisfaction with the Brasilian government at that time. Chico's sound, quintessentially Brasilian, deftly captures the melancholy and exuberance that define Brasil in its truest sense. Chico captures the essence of Brasil in this CD, something we should feel is not just Brasilian but human. This is one of the few CDs that can bring a tear to my eye every time I listen... And "um grande abraco para todos meus amigos brasileiros!!"

Buarque's Sound Translates Into Any Language,

Meus Caros Amigos, My Dear Friends, represents a high point in the career of extraordinary writer-composer-singer Chico Buarque. A leader of the Brazilian Popular Music movement, Buarque combines politics and poetry with a SOUND that translates to any language. You don't have to understand Brazilian Portuguese to hear the rapture, the longing, the word play. Buarque is famous for writing his lyrics through the eyes of a woman with the feminine "I" and Brazilian superstar Maria Bethania has recorded many of them. Haunting is a much overused word but it certainly applies to many of the songs on Meus Caros Amigos. I bought this album primarily because I fell in love with O Que Sera, the theme song from Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. Bye Bye Brazil also opens and closes with Chico's lovely song by the same name.
