Definition Of The Word "Entertainer"!, May 29, 2001
This review is from: Meus Momentos (Audio CD)
The story can now be told: Wilson Simonal possessed one of Brazil's all-time great voices, was its consummate entertainer of the sixties, and the only reason you may not have heard of him is due to the ostracism he suffered from the early 70s to his death last year, as a result of (basically false) accusations that he was a rat at the service of the military dictatorship of the time. All that is irrelevant now. All that matters are the 40 or so examples of pop-bossa-jazz-samba-soul-groove-lounge-vocal genius contained on this spectacular 2-CD set, recorded between 1963 and 1971. During this period, Simonal scored irresistible hit after irresistible hit, broke ground for blacks in Brazil's entertainment field, packed stadiums, hosted a TV show, refined existing musical genres and invented new ones, kept everyone--young, old, middle class, working class, black, white, everybody!--smiling, laughing, happy, dancing and grooving along. No need to discuss individual tracks here, they're all awesome and incredibly diverse. There'll never be another Wilson Simonal, although his two sons are today among Brazil's most promising young talents. Get this now while you can, language barriers mean nothing with music this infectious and sophisticated!

Lost Brazilian gold, January 3, 2003
This review is from: Meus Momentos (Audio CD)
An excellent 2-CD best of which captures most of this Brazilian soft pop/soul crooner's best work from the late 1960s, as well as some some later traacks that reveal his shortcomings. Inventive, exhuberant pop music which occasionally hits great heights -- mysteriously, though, this collection omits his most awesome track, "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem", off the first "Alegria" album... but don't let that stop you -- if you want to check out this obscure lost pop legend, this collection is probably the best place to start.
