Book Description

January 15, 1995
The dramatic landscape of Mexico has inspired generations of Mexican painters. In the art of the past, Mexican landscape held the secondary role of scenic backdrop for historic and religious themes. Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, attitudes changed toward the landscape, and it became a venerated subject for painting.

The significance and recent resurgence of landscape painting in Mexico is examined here by contributors Esther Acevedo, independent curator, Mexico City, and Mary Schneider Enriquez, arts critic for Mexico, ARTnews Magazine.

Mexico: A Landscape Revisited additionally features biographies of the artists as well as a chronology highlighting important events in Mexican history and art. Lavishly illustrated with full-color images, this volume introduces a powerful visual vocabulary of form and color that is uniquely Mexican. Its in-depth look at Mexican landscape painting imparts a greater appreciation of the genre and brings the reader closer to the country and countryside that is its source and inspiration.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This bilingual publication is both a catalog of a traveling exhibition and an examination of the emerging importance of landscape painting of-and in-Mexico. The early submergence of the Mexican identity under that of the European conquerors faded rapidly during the 18th century, and the unique quality of the Mexican face, both human and natural, became a source of wonder and pride. The text traces the evolution of aesthetic forms from pictographs through codexes and maps to scientific representations of places and people in the dominant genre of landscape painting. The impact of the European world is not minimized, but the authors stress the continuing strength of the essentially Mexican vision at the heart of this aesthetic journey. Full-color illustrations give a tantalizing glimpse of the richness of this vision, short biographies of the artists prove useful if strangely telegraphic in style, and an easy-to-follow time line of landscape and history is provided. This simple, straightforward book will appeal to the general reader, especially those served by libraries in the Southwest.
