This was the texbook we used in our Net+ class in Spring '05, and it will be used again in Spring '06. I still refer to it on occasion. It covers everything essential, and explains the topics deeply but in plain terms. The chapters are distinct, with appropriate diagrams and tables, and the index is elaborate, which make it a good reference resource. This book is expensive, but it's been worth it to me.

This review is from: Mike Meyers' Network+ Guide To Managing and Troubleshooting Networks (Mike Meyers' Guides) (Paperback)
I've had to take two networking fundamentals courses because I switched colleges, and the second one required that the networking class be taken from their college. The two classes used different books. While there wasn't anything terribly wrong with the first book, "Mike Meyers' Network+ Guide To Managing and Troubleshooting Networks" is far better. Meyers is an extremely talented technical writer. Difficult subjects were easy to understand. His writing style is straightforward and friendly. It is as if a good friend sat down with you and taught you networking. Meyers explains the background of and the whys of networking so you're not stuck memorizing a bunch of dry facts. While other books may teach you what's theoretically supposed to happen, Meyers tells you both what supposed to happen and what actually happens in the field. He lets you in on jargon and what techs actually do so you won't be left looking like a dork. I'm amazed at how much better I understand networking now.Book also includes chapter summaries, key words, chapter quizzes, and exercises. Throughout the book there are sidebars which bring up different topics you have studied, how they relate to the current topic, and suggestions for exercises which will reinforce what you have learned.

This book is very readable and useable. Loads of information. You can fix just about anything with it. Although intended for a networking exam, it reads like a book and is valuable as a reference book and how to set up and repair a network, in a home. office or corporate enviroment. Well illustrated.
