Editorial Reviews

Following the release of their Grammy-nominated self-titled debut, James Mercer and Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse, collectively known as Broken Bells, present a new four-song EP titled Meyrin Fields. The EP features the previously unreleased tracks "Windows" and "Heartless Empire," as well as "An Easy Life," and the title track.

Broken Bells' genesis can be traced back to longtime mutual fans Burton and Mercer first face to face meeting at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch until May 2008 when the finally seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Meyrin Fields is the latest product of this amazing union.

1. Meyrin Fields
2. Windows (previously unreleased)
3. An Easy Life
4. Heartless Empire (previously unreleased)

After listening to this quaint little EP, I feel like their first album, self-titled Broken Bells, was more of a compromise between the unique styles of James Mercer and Danger Mouse than it was a synergy of sound. Don't get me wrong, that album was clearly a 5 star masterpiece! I say this only because now, considering their more recent work, it appears to me that they are stepping forward not as two individual artists who happened to create a compilation together, but as a single, coherent band. This EP marks a step forward for this band. It sounds more like an initial project than a sophomore effort because, in its own right, it is so raw. The album drifts farther into the world of electronics and synthesizers than anything Mercer has done in the past. Missing is the pop-folk rock underpinnings. Many fans of The Shins may find this EP lacking for that reason. But if you find yourself disappointed with this EP, I challenge you to listen to it again, with fresh ears, because it should be appreciated in its own right as an independent work of art.

If your looking for something more like The Shins, check out James Mercer and fellow Shins members' first band, Flake Music. They released one full length CD in 1997 called When You Land Here, It's Time to Return, which can be found right here on Amazon, used, at a reasonable rate. Flake Music is amazing too. If you are an avid Shins fan, and you haven't heard their early work produced under the alias Flake Music, it is a must that you check it out. Flake Music also produced several singles and EPs in the mid to late 90's, but they are very hard to find.

In March of last year, James Mercer, the lead singer of The Shins, and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) of Gnarls Barkley fame, teamed up to form Broken Bells. The result was one of the best albums of 2010 with captivating singles like "The Ghost Inside" and "The High Road" leading the way. Now, almost exactly a year later, the duo is back with four additional songs, two previously unreleased and the other two only released digitally.

EPs of this length are typically nothing more than a collection of tracks deemed to be unfit for inclusion on a previously released or upcoming full-length album. However, in the case of "Meyrin Fields," that is not the case. Although the overall sound and feel of the EP is similar to that of their self-titled debut, there is still a resonant progression; a glimpse of things to come.

"Meyrin Fields" may not quite satisfy fans who have been hungry for more since the first time they heard Broken Bells' debut, but it does serve the purpose of confirming this side project for two talented artists has not yet reached its completion.

Opening with the title track, "Meyrin Fields," a track originally released as a B-side to "The Ghost Inside," the combined influence of both band members is still just as easily heard as it was on Broken Bells' debut.

The quick, electronic beat with a blend of clean and distorted sounds can easily be compared to Danger Mouse's other projects, but as soon as Mercer's trademark vocals enter the mix, the resulting sound is undeniably their own.

The following track, "Windows," begins with a beat that sounds like it could have been ripped out of a spy movie, but a self-harmonized Mercer, frequently showing off his impressive range, takes the song in a different direction.

This EP complements Broken Bells' first album. I recommend it as an "add-on" to your Broken Bells palate. Two more words were required to complete this review, but you got a whole sentence!

Broken Bells' debut album was a bit of a slow burner for me, on first listen I thought it was okay but after a few listens I realised it wasn't just 'okay' it was bloody brilliant. Meyrin Fields was instantly that good to my ears, each song is brilliant and I agree with the reviews that suggest that these 4 songs sound more like a cohesive band rather than a couple of distinctive individuals colliding musically. these songs are so good that i was almost tempted to deduct a star for the short running time, it's under 15 minutes and feels like it's over before it has begun.

I loved the first Broken Bells album and this one did not disappoint. the only down side is this one only has 4 songs on it which just makes me want them to release a third album asap ;)

Broken Bells in my opinion are the bridge between art house psychedelic rock and radio pop. They have the accessibility of U2 but are poetic much like Mercer's other band The Shins. Some day they will break through the mainstream and this EP will be much sought after, all the songs are great in their own right, but the title track is something else, its badass. It has a kind of intensity and urgency that most songs don't, it's a pump up song, it will inspire you to succeed, it will make you want to kick some ass.

Looking for more Broken Bells? This has a few songs that were not on their album. Songs are up the same alley as the rest of the Broken Bells songs. Awesome addition!
