4.0 out of 5 stars THE EVOLUTION OF A LEGEND, November 11, 2002
This review is from: Mi-24 Hind in Action - Aircraft No. 83 (Paperback)
Don't know an HIP from an HIND? Or the difference between an HIND D, E, or F? Then you're in luck as this book walks you through it all. After a brief history of Mikhail L. Mil, the Mi-1 HARE, the Mi-4 HOUND, and Mi-8 HIP (the HIND's predecessor), the Mi-24 is revealed as it evolves into the legend that it's become. With plenty of b&w action photos and line drawings to keep everybody happy, they even throw in 2 color pages of paint schemes. My only gripe (other then the need of an updated edition) is that this book doesn't appear to have been proofread before publication. Two different dates are given for Mil's passing (it was January 31, 1970). The TV-2-117A is a 1,700 shp engine while the TV-3-117 is a 2,200 shp engine. The weapons system operator has a cockpit door on the port side, not the starboard side (that's the pilot). Libya didn't lose 3 Mi-24's in 1987. They were Mi-25's (the export variant of the HIND D's). And finally, the AT-6 is the SPIRAL (the AT-3 is the SAGGER). While these are minor errors and misprints, they were glaring enough for me to catch them. Luckily the pictures and drawings more then made up for it. Now about that updated edition......

As a avid Miniature wargamer, This Book is a great asset to me. It covers Variants, how the Hind came into production and Paint and Marking schemes. EXCELLENT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Assault Helicopter, August 31, 2009

This review is from: Mi-24 Hind in Action - Aircraft No. 83 (Paperback)
57 pages of photos, line drawings and history of one of the world's most famous assault helicopters. This book covers every model and make of the Hind up to 1988. A perfect book for modelers, it is also a very enjoyable addition to an enthusiast's collection.

It's a bit old, but that means it covers more of the original history and variants than a newer book. Because of its age, it does not cover the war in Afghanistan, but it certainly addresses its use in Warsaw Pact countries during the cold war. Yefim Gordon's 2001 book on the Mil-24 is more comprehensive, but much more expensive.

As an aviation fan, I am glad I added this to my library.
