The truth proves too difficult--and dangerous--to contain in the ninth season of MI-5, the BBC's venerable espionage series. The facts in question here concern the real identity of Richard Armitage's Lucas North, who has made chief of Section D in the season opener. While contending with terrorist actions against Britain from around the globe, North comes face to face with his past in the form of Vaughn Edwards (Iain Glen, Game of Thrones), who offers valuable information about North in exchange for a sensitive MI-5 file. To up the ante, an old flame (Laila Rouass) is brought back into the picture, forcing North to make a decision: give up government secrets or win back the woman he loves? In typical MI-5 form, the answer is hard fought and filled with shocking moments, not the least of which is a possible end to a major character's career. For fans, the eight episodes contained here present one of the best cliffhangers of the show's lengthy run, and set up the 10th season with an intriguing problem that should prove fascinating in its unfolding. Extras in the three-disc set are again modest: there are two short making-of featurettes and commentaries by series star Nicola Walker, executive producer Andrew Woodhead, writer Anthony Nielson, and others. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

The penultimate season of the hugely successful, long-running drama introduces a host of new characters. There’s Beth Bailey, a brilliant ex-mercenary who was posing as an Eastern European prostitute when she runs into the team. Dimitri, an ex officer in British Special Forces has been recruited for his skills in fighting terrorism on the front line. Funny and warm, his approach to being a spy is much more relaxed than Lucas. And finally, data analyst Tariq has been fast-tracked through the system. Young, bright and keen, he’s a true computer whizz and what he lacks in experience, he makes up for with natural brilliance. Meanwhile the usually calm, confident Harry is caught in a difficult position when he is forced to work closely with the Russians. Relations between the CIA and MI5 reach breaking point over mysterious hackers. And a horrific truth about Lucas’ past is uncovered by Harry when they come face to face in a compelling interrogation. Friendships are tested to the limit, Harry and Ruth’s bond intensifies and the depth of deceit leads to the ultimate game of cat and mouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love MI-5 April 22, 2011
Format:DVD
I was lucky enough to catch this on netflix. I was shocked to see if released so early. The series does start to take a few twists and turns in each character plot. Lucas North is just amazing and will continue to amaze throughout this season. Fine acting, fine storylines and it is BBC. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Series since The Wire July 1, 2011
Format:DVD
I'm not sure in the 9th year Spooks deserves 5 stars but I know it doesn't deserve a one, so consider this the antidote. Even when it isn't at the top of its game and I still think 8 and 9 both improved over the middle years although for me this series never goes below a 4 star ranking. I miss Adam but then that's the genius of this series over all American ones is that no one character (except the beloved Harry of course) is indispensible. From Tom to Adam to Roz, all died for Queen and Country and on the series goes. My wife saw me watching episode one of season 9 (I have a region free DVD which I bought on Amazon for 60 bucks and it is the best money I ever spent. I've now watched both seasons of Garrow's Law (best new series out there) and all because I can buy BBC on Amazon UK and if you're Amazon Prime the shipping cost is negligible.
Anyway I'm watching episode one of season 9 of Spooks and my wife said "hey how come I'm not watching this show with you"? So I went and bought Spooks series one and now I'm watching the whole wonderful thing all over again with my wife. If you've not watched this series do yourself a favor and catch up

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!! April 10, 2011

Usually there's a year's wait between MI 5 seasons. This one is coming out just 6 months or so after season 8. I'm thrilled. My family and I all love this show.

3.0 out of 5 stars too unbelievable August 31, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Although there are some gripping moments in this season, the idea of a character becoming so bad is just not credible. If the character did some bad things but struggled with it and didn't cross the line of killing or totally betraying friends, I could understand it. Also, the killing or leaving of 3 main characters last season blunts the impact of the story since most of the new characters hardly know Lucas. The new characters were hardly developed and too new for this type of storyline. Killing off main characters is sometimes good story telling or necessary if actors leave the show. But if the writers intent was to keep things fresh or exciting, the result is tiresome. It would have been much better to keep the old characters.
Ditto for killing guest characters or some villains. After a while, you can assume that most people on the show will eventually die. Some good characters, like Arkady from season 7, could have been more utilized instead of being replaced by one sided characters. The same goes for the turnover of CIA representatives and the Home Secretary. Over the past 3 seasons, Lucas had three love interests that all end badly which gets to be too much.
I like MI-5 but a lot of enjoyment of the past two seasons is disrupted by too much death, high turnover of characters, and characters suddenly turning evil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad June 26, 2011
By Terry
Format:DVD
Like another reviewer, I too was happy to be able to see this series on Netflix without waiting until January 2012.

Also like another reviewer, I was surprised by the way the series developed with regard to Lucas. It wasn't done very effectively, and the story unfolded too quickly. It went against his character's nature. It brought back memories of the unraveling of Tom Quinn's character.

Regardless of that, I still love the show, I loved this series, and I'll watch it again a couple of times while I anxiously await Series 10!

3.0 out of 5 stars ummmm... what just happened? April 24, 2013
By Kate

I love this show, I really do, but what was going on in this series? This season was lucky that it had such fantastic actors because this storyline was ridiculous. I did love the Harry-Ruth relationship. It's just beautifully written and acted. Peter Firth and Nicola Walker are amazing. Did not love the Lucas North story plot. This was a man who endured 8 years of torture for the country he loved. It just was unbelievable that he wasn't who we thought he was. And Maya? Laila Rouass is gorgeous and talented, but she and Richard had absolutely no chemistry. It felt forced. That being said, Richard Armitage is beyond talented. He gave it every thing he had despite the horrible direction his character was given. (I can't help but wonder if maybe he needed to leave due to filming The Hobbit?) Still, there were better ways to send this character off. I am glad his death was him doing the right thing, letting us see the Lucas we fell in love with. Also enjoyed Sophia Myles as Beth. She's a wonderful actress. Overall, the acting- fantastic. The story- not so much :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best July 19, 2011
Format:DVD
Firstly, let me say that the BBC produces some of the finest shows on television. So this series, MI-5 is one of the best of the best. Because of their topical themes each season, their penchant for either killing off main characters in suprise endings, or having characters turn out not as you've been led to believe, they keep you on your toes episode after episode. This 9th season is no different in that respect. Coming out much sooner than past seasons was a real treat! The crew is back, and they do not disappoint.I hung on every episode and wanted to watch them ALL in one sitting, but managed to force myself to be patient and stretch out the enjoyment. I hope this series continues ad infinitum! The one drawback to many BBC series is that the later years are often not released on US format DVD for years! So glad they haven't done that with this show. You're in for a treat and I highly recommend this season 9 to you for your viewing excitement and pleasure.

I just love all the characters, plot twists, and stories from the entire series. I'm sorry so many of my fave characters had to die but at least Harry Pierce is a mainstay.

Loved the series, but we viewers were invested in the Lucas North character only to have him saddled with a sordid past. Ouch.
