Neat idea, but...,

This review is from: Mi Abuelita (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
This book is a bilingual story that describes the author's visit to her grandmother's home in the Dominican Republic. The poetic-feeling text is creatively laid out on the page, and the illustrations are really cute (done by a group of children). This is a neat idea for a book, but the story lacks a plot. The "climax" is when the grandmother names the newborn calf. Then she proceeds to act like nothing special happened. I don't think it will hold the attention of young children very well. The story could have been developed a lot further and could have given more culturally specific information. It seems like it could have happened anywhere that has palm trees and mountains. In short, this book seemed promising at first, but ended up being a bit disappointing.
