I think you will find flamenco history will rank Estrella Morente as one of the greatest flamenco artists of all time. Comparable to a Camaron or a Carmen Linares. I know it is a big statement considering her age but that is how good she is at the cante. But it is not just the sweet voice of honey it is also the quality of the songs. Most of the songs on this album are traditional flamenco songs. As such, they have selected only the finest and so it is hard to find a week song on the album. Her father the great Enrique Morente is really guiding his daughter in the right direction.
Her new album "calle del aire" (a christmas album but in the traditional spanish style) is a piece of pure joy. The musical structures are stunning and present a wide variety of musical styles (not just flamenco). Get your hands on it if you can. I think it may even be more impressive than this one. I know, another big statement. The final track on this one has a live recording of Estrella as a 7 yr old singing at a family gathering... I can not even explain how unbelievable her talent was even at that tender age.
She has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in flamenco... it sears into your being and doesn't let go.
Love must go to other young artists such as Nina Pastori & Arcangel but the reality is Estrella is so far ahead they will never catch her.

You might be attracted to "Mi cante y un poema" (My song and a poem) by the critical acclaim and reported 80,000 sales it has notched up - massive for a flamenco album.
You might have been captivated by hearing samples of 21-year-old Estrella Morente's unique voice, with its mixture of sweet clarity, raucous power and arabesque control. Haunting.
And you probably couldn't fail to notice the fact that this young lady is just plain drop-dead gorgeous from any angle. She's a marketer's dream, if only the music were a little less real, a little more "mellow", a little more MTV-friendly. Not to mention, in English.
But no, Estrella Morente is the real thing from Granada in Spain. Her father Enrique is an outstanding flamenco cantaor (singer). Estrella has learned her craft with him and other flamenco greats such as the guitarists Manolo Sanlucar and the legendary Sabicas, with whom Estrella recorded when she was eight!
For the purists, "Mi cante y un poema" is a real flamenco album respecting all the forms - a fine addition to any collection. But there are plenty of hooks in there for non-specialists too, with excitement, tenderness, exoticism, fun and great guitar playing. An astonishing debut album.
Also worth checking out - "Nueva York / Granada", a double album recorded in New York and Granada featuring Sabicas and Enrique Morente.

Whether you are a newcomer to Flamenco music or have know it for years, this CD is a must have. It delivers a very well written cavalcade of songs and music unlike that I've ever heard before. Estrellas Morente's powerful latin voice will make you fall in love with flamenco if you haven't already. There is an even distribution of fast and slow songs. Don't worry if you don't speak spanish or not. Flamenco es para todos! Estrella Morente will set your soul on fire with her sultry siren-like voice, desfuta Mi Cante y Un Poema!
