5.0 out of 5 stars Jaci Hits Gold... Again, July 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
To be honest, I was expecting an album that didn't quite measure up to LLEGAR A TI, and on first listen, I was a little let down. But as I began to listen more and the songs began to grow on me, I found myself enjoying this album almost as much as I enjoyed CRYSTAL CLEAR (Jaci's best album so far, IMHO).

The highlight of the album is definitely "Como Se Cura Una Herida," a song in which Jaci invokes the passion and heartbreak of her parents' divorce through her silky vocals. The bridge doesn't shy away from the answer to a broken heart being found in God. Following this hit single are two songs that are nice enough, and definitely showcase Jaci's voice in its smooth form. But for me, the album doesn't kick off until we get into track #5 - "Dueno De Mi Corazon" (Owner of my Heart), and then "Sin Ti Nu Puedo Vivir" (I Can't Live without You.) The songs take her back into the Latin groove, and she delivers so professionally. Her joining up with Son By 4 on "Vida Mia" is another highlight - and the only place on the album where English is spoken. The rest of the album keeps up the great material, and building to a delightfully rollicking "Vaya Con Dios" (Go With God). The only two songs on this album below Jaci's standard are "Fuego de Amor" (which just doesn't go anywhere) and the rancherra version of "Como Se Cura" (save it for a single, not the finale of this incredible album.)

Overall, this is an album that will take Jaci to new heights in the Spanish market and prepare her for what's around the bend on her next English project.

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest heart sings, November 7, 2001
By
Omar Pom (Dutch St.Martin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
How would an artist handle the pressure of walking the tightrope between two musical styles? And what if on the two sides torches were aimed at her? If the artist is Jaci Velasquez, she would just cool things down with solid footing on the narrow path and soothing vocals to extinguish the fire. After much success in the Christian music arena and more than adequate buzz as a Latin pop artist, Jaci Velasquez offers up a collection of songs that are truly form the heart on her second Latin production- "Mi Corazon"

Completely sidestepping the dreaded sophomore slump, Velasquez shines through even more clearly than on her first Spanish album. Blending vulnerable, but no less powerful, lyrics with masterful production and arrangement from hard-hitters like Emilio Estefan Jr. and Mark Heimermann, the 22-year-old songstress shows the strides she has made both vocally and personally. Taking a page from her critically acclaimed Christian smash "Crystal Clear", she delves into the lessons of loving and unshakable faith that have helped her mature as a person. Gospel industry critics who were crying wolf at the thought of a possible watering down of her message on her previous Latin endeavor, will be satisfied to find overt (and joyful) Jesus statements on musical gems like "Dueno de Mi Corazon" and "Vaya con Dios". However, the album is not a series of sermons, lest concerned mainstream observers find a confirmation for a conspiracy theory. Tracks like the sweetly jazz-inflected "Dejame quererte para siempre" and the organic guitar-driven "Bendito Amor" find the young lady deftly mining the field of pop love songs with deep conviction sans the all-too-common oversensitive words or unnecessary vocal acrobatics. Cautiously continuing the experimentation with new musical styles, the artist flirts with R&B on "Lo que nunca cambiaria" and delivers a commendable performance. Other excellent cuts include the celebratory "Sin ti no puedo vivir" with its irresistible hand clapping and hip-swaying percussion and the radio-ready "Vida mia", which pairs the artist with Puerto Rican sensation Son by Four.

All in all, audiences of this album will be charmed on hearing the wide range of emotions expressed on this album. The previous reliance on translations has given way to original Spanish and, hence, stronger lyrical content. Copious variations of the word mi corazon will be easily overlooked as they seamlessly integrate in the trove of sonic jewels. With the bittersweet and honest single "Como se cura una herida" at its helm, this album ranks as a worthy addition to the Latin pop scene and an undeniable expression of faith. The torches on both sides seem to have only strengthened the resolve of a young woman whose eyes are on neither. A look into her heart will be enough to see her driving force.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jaci's image maturing, January 9, 2002
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
With "Llegar a ti" Jaci made a substantial mark in the crowded Spanish crossover market and with "Mi Corazón" she's found a more distinctive sound. Less of her soft-poppy Christian music past, more vibrant young woman -- without the need to embellish every line with 30 extra notes (a la the Cristina Aguilera's of the world).
