5.0 out of 5 stars Jaci Hits Gold... Again, July 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
To be honest, I was expecting an album that didn't quite measure up to LLEGAR A TI, and on first listen, I was a little let down. But as I began to listen more and the songs began to grow on me, I found myself enjoying this album almost as much as I enjoyed CRYSTAL CLEAR (Jaci's best album so far, IMHO).

The highlight of the album is definitely "Como Se Cura Una Herida," a song in which Jaci invokes the passion and heartbreak of her parents' divorce through her silky vocals. The bridge doesn't shy away from the answer to a broken heart being found in God. Following this hit single are two songs that are nice enough, and definitely showcase Jaci's voice in its smooth form. But for me, the album doesn't kick off until we get into track #5 - "Dueno De Mi Corazon" (Owner of my Heart), and then "Sin Ti Nu Puedo Vivir" (I Can't Live without You.) The songs take her back into the Latin groove, and she delivers so professionally. Her joining up with Son By 4 on "Vida Mia" is another highlight - and the only place on the album where English is spoken. The rest of the album keeps up the great material, and building to a delightfully rollicking "Vaya Con Dios" (Go With God). The only two songs on this album below Jaci's standard are "Fuego de Amor" (which just doesn't go anywhere) and the rancherra version of "Como Se Cura" (save it for a single, not the finale of this incredible album.)

Overall, this is an album that will take Jaci to new heights in the Spanish market and prepare her for what's around the bend on her next English project.

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest heart sings, November 7, 2001
By

This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
How would an artist handle the pressure of walking the tightrope between two musical styles? And what if on the two sides torches were aimed at her? If the artist is Jaci Velasquez, she would just cool things down with solid footing on the narrow path and soothing vocals to extinguish the fire. After much success in the Christian music arena and more than adequate buzz as a Latin pop artist, Jaci Velasquez offers up a collection of songs that are truly form the heart on her second Latin production- "Mi Corazon"

Completely sidestepping the dreaded sophomore slump, Velasquez shines through even more clearly than on her first Spanish album. Blending vulnerable, but no less powerful, lyrics with masterful production and arrangement from hard-hitters like Emilio Estefan Jr. and Mark Heimermann, the 22-year-old songstress shows the strides she has made both vocally and personally. Taking a page from her critically acclaimed Christian smash "Crystal Clear", she delves into the lessons of loving and unshakable faith that have helped her mature as a person. Gospel industry critics who were crying wolf at the thought of a possible watering down of her message on her previous Latin endeavor, will be satisfied to find overt (and joyful) Jesus statements on musical gems like "Dueno de Mi Corazon" and "Vaya con Dios". However, the album is not a series of sermons, lest concerned mainstream observers find a confirmation for a conspiracy theory. Tracks like the sweetly jazz-inflected "Dejame quererte para siempre" and the organic guitar-driven "Bendito Amor" find the young lady deftly mining the field of pop love songs with deep conviction sans the all-too-common oversensitive words or unnecessary vocal acrobatics. Cautiously continuing the experimentation with new musical styles, the artist flirts with R&B on "Lo que nunca cambiaria" and delivers a commendable performance. Other excellent cuts include the celebratory "Sin ti no puedo vivir" with its irresistible hand clapping and hip-swaying percussion and the radio-ready "Vida mia", which pairs the artist with Puerto Rican sensation Son by Four.

All in all, audiences of this album will be charmed on hearing the wide range of emotions expressed on this album. The previous reliance on translations has given way to original Spanish and, hence, stronger lyrical content. Copious variations of the word mi corazon will be easily overlooked as they seamlessly integrate in the trove of sonic jewels. With the bittersweet and honest single "Como se cura una herida" at its helm, this album ranks as a worthy addition to the Latin pop scene and an undeniable expression of faith. The torches on both sides seem to have only strengthened the resolve of a young woman whose eyes are on neither. A look into her heart will be enough to see her driving force.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jaci's image maturing, January 9, 2002
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
With "Llegar a ti" Jaci made a substantial mark in the crowded Spanish crossover market and with "Mi Corazón" she's found a more distinctive sound. Less of her soft-poppy Christian music past, more vibrant young woman -- without the need to embellish every line with 30 extra notes (a la the Cristina Aguilera's of the world).

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaci Canta A Dios Con Su Corazon, February 24, 2003
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
Jaci scores again in both the Christian and Latin genres with this Dove Award-winning CD! She covers several issues that are close to her heart: her parents' divorce, her genuine love for God, and several true-love-waits songs. All of them are very heartfelt, inspiring, and some are quite energetic.
"Como Se Cura Una Herida": The first hit off the CD. This describes how Jaci is able to count on God through various painful situations, like the divorce of her parents.
"Bendito Amor": Beautifully written by Emilio Estefan and Jon Secada! Beautifully performed by Jaci!
"Lo Que Nunca Cambiaria": My fave song on the album! Jaci describes how she won't change God's Love for anything.
"Fuego De Amor": Great motivational song to both believers and nonbelievers!
"Dueno De Mi Corazon" & "Sin Ti No Puedo Vivir": Both are so worship-worthy to God, and they are very cool to dance to!
"Invierno De Mi Ser": There's a genuine message in this song that Jaci really wants to get out in the world. She says, "Solo vivo para amarTe" ("I live only to love You").
"Esta Vez": A great song about reconciliation and forgiveness!
"Vida Mia": The vocals by Jaci and Son By 4 are just incredible! An ideal Christian wedding song!
"Dejame QuererTe Para Siempre": My second fave song! This makes me feel so alive in Him because of the message, the lyrics, music, and of course, Jaci's voice!
"Pensando En Mi": The English version of this song, "You Don't Miss A Thing" is from CRYSTAL CLEAR. Both versions are great!
"Vaya Con Dios" : The title says it all! Great song to worship God and motivate others to do so!
"Como Se Cura Una Herida (Ranchera Version)": I really like this version, but the original one is prettier in my book.
Overall the CD matches up to the LLEGAR A TI album, for Jaci has shown the world who she is, and who and what she stands for!

3.0 out of 5 stars It all depends on which perspective you're talking about.., December 11, 2001

First things first: Jaci Velasquez has an amazing voice. It's powerful, rich, and full of emotion. She's a bonafide talent amist manufactured artists.

"Mi Corazón" certainy proves that. Her voice is beautiful throughout, never upstaged by the impressive musical scores and arrangements. On these (musical) merits alone, I would give the CD 5 stars.

But then -- it all depends on which perspective you're talking about. Jaci Velasquez bills herself to be a Christian singer, which (at least on her English-language CDs) is true. Yet I could not classify a CD that speaks outrightly about God only a handfull of times on 12 tracks a Christian CD.

Most of the songs are written (or translated) in the ever-evasive, prone to multiple interpretation "You format". Take, for instance, track #7, "Invierno de mi ser"... this song is easy interpreted to mean "you -- my romantic interest" or "you -- God". The meaning simply isn't clear. This happens time and time again.

Of course, vagueness is to be expected when you have noted Bible scholars such as Emilio Estefan and Jon Secada writing lyrics for a "Christian" CD! Yes, these two are wonderfully talented, as evidenced in the unique-sounding track, "Lo que nunca cambiaría"... but who is Jaci kidding? They can't write about what they don't live.

Music is supposed to be a ministry, a tool to worship God. When you choose non-Christians as partners in a project, your end result is watered-down and it only serves to belittle the One whom you're trying to adore.

I expected so much more from Jaci Velasquez. Her debut CD, "Heavenly Place" was simply excellent and such a blessing to me. That is why I was so disappointed to hear "Mi Corazón"... Ms. Velasquez, the way you reach people to Christ is not through a vague, watered-down Gospel; the Bible says that faith comes through hearing the word of God! I sincerely hope that she can come once again to the starting point in her musical career -- maybe she wasn't as experienced or sophisticated, but she was real.

In the end, it all depends on which perspective you're talking about -- strictly musical, 5 stars. But if you're looking for lyrics that the Holy Spirit can use to minister to you... then this CD just isn't it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, August 29, 2001

I've listened to and bought every single one of Jaci's albums and I simply keep on loving her........ She's a great singer and carries good messages on her songs. I love every single one of her albums they all had a song or two that I could definetly identify with. She doesn't not only praise God but she has a great beat on every song. Her albums are with no doubt a must have for everyones collection. On this particular album I think she shows a more mature side of her and sings about rough experiences on her life and how she must get through them, with which I can definetly identify. And as the title indicates "Mi corazon" it's all about her heart. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, September 6, 2004
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
This is just a comment of how much I enjoy Jaci's music. Her hispanic music is the best. I love the tunes and knowing that I am not singing along with something vulgar in another language. :) "Llegar a Ti" has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I have ruined the tape because I've played it so much. So I came online to buy a CD of it and discovered "Mi Corazon". I am overjoyed with it! I am so glad that Jaci made another hispanic recording! I hope that she does more in the future. It fits her singing ability more than plain American pop-style or rock-style music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaci at her best, December 5, 2003
This review is from: Mi Corazón (Audio CD)
I have every Jaci CD and I have to say that this is my favorite. I don't speak Spanish, but I've memorized every word and know every tune by heart. Jaci poured her heart out on this album and broke many borders. She sang about her parent's divorce, her once broken heart and her strong faith. As a Christian singer some of those things are taboo to sing about (which is ridiculous, I might add), but she felt called to share her thoughts and feelings. My favorite songs have to be Lo Que Nunca Cambiaria, Invierno de Mi Ser, and Dejame Quererte Para Siempre. Her voice is still smooth on this album. I've found that her latest ones she's kind of choppy and trying to hard to be what's hot. This album is definitely what Jaci is made of and capable of. You should go out and buy it- NOW! lol!
