Editorial Reviews

Never previously available in any form, Miami Pop Festival, introduces the first recorded stage performances of "Hear My Train A Comin'" and "Tax Free" while showcasing definitive live takes on such classics as "Fire," "Hey Joe," "I Don't Live Today" and "Purple Haze." The package includes never before published photos taken at the festival and an essay by award-winning music journalist and Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli. This album includes the show as originally recorded on site by Hendrix's long term sound engineer, Eddie Kramer. This pressing is an all analogue mastering by Bernie Grundman.

Hendrix fans have had to wait a long time for the official release of this May 1968 performance at Gulfstream Park, Miami: 45 years to be exact (sobering to think that had Jimi lived, he’d now be a grand old man of 71). At this event for the first time in his short meteoric career, Jimi was placed top-of-the-bill.

So, what’s it like? Well pretty good actually, definitely not ‘scraping the barrel’ recordings but a superb concert performance delivered with finely mastered sound. This is the Experience trio – i.e. Jimi, Noel and Mitch, performing their early work with gusto, and with the mojo in overdrive.

Highlights: almost all of it. Standout tracks are the opener ‘Hey Joe’, ‘Fire’, ‘Hear my Train A-Commin’, ‘Purple Haze’ and – especially – ‘Red House’ which might be his best-ever recorded performance of this blues number. Despite the 1968 date of the concert there is no material from the ‘Electric Ladyland’ project, but the rain-deluge in the afternoon which put a damper on the event reportedly inspired Jimi to write the song ‘Rainy Day, Dream Away’.

You get 8x tracks from the evening headliner performance (preceded by 2 minutes of messing about and tuning up, titled ‘Introduction’) plus additional versions of ‘Fire’ and ‘Foxey Lady’ from the afternoon’s interrupted-by-rain-deluge mini-performance. The 2-gatefold cover sleeve contains a single CD, and a classy 24-page color booklet crammed with numerous rarely-seen photos of the band, around which is wrapped the text of Bob Santelli’s entertaining (if prolix) essay on the Miami pop festival and background music scene in 1968.

For the Hendrix aficionado: don’t hesitate, buy.

Out of all the live Jimi cd's this one brings me closer to imagining what it would have been like to see him in person. Every emotion is picked up from the band...a little joking, a little frustration, and a lot of fun jamming. It's true Janie Hendrix continues to churn the cash box with "unreleased" songs...some are hidden little gems, others are for the completist. But who cares..it's Jimi! This show has a lot of unknown history to it, from Michael Lang using this as a launch pad for a bigger event (Woodstock,) to Jimi writing the lyrics to "Rainy Day" for Electric Ladyland because the Sunday show was rained out...not to mention the fact the City of Hallandale Beach actually allowed an event such as this to take place is a mystery all in itself. Keep in mind, in 1968 Miami was a very conservative place and not even close to what it is today. What this show allows the listener to engage in is everything Jimi became famous for...from improvisation, to loose jamming, to locked in the pocket precise playing with Noel and Mitch. Whoever designed the packaging, nailed the Miami theme perfectly. First the cover...blue sky and Jimi wearing a white ruffled shirt and deep red velvet pants...it screams Miami. Then the pictures inside...which to me are worth getting the cd for those alone...never before seen cool candid shots....and finally the music. From the crazy, blurry beginning of Hey Joe...to one of the hottest versions of FIre I've ever heard. Eddie Kramer's experience shines through on the mix...considering this was outside in a wide open area, with no acoustics and a South Florida breeze blowing, the sound is amazing. Bottom line...as whole, this package works and everything fits perfectly together....Miami Pop Festival...Experience it...you won't be disappointed.

After waiting decades for this release, it is finally here!! The sound quality is excellent and Hendrix is @ his best for the early years. Jimi unleashes some outstanding blues work on Red House, Hear my Train and Hey Joe. My favorite is Hansen and Carlsen's Tax Free where Hendrix reaches through the clouds into outer space and Mitch is countering with his jazzy rat e tat Brilliance. Even though it is early Jimi and We've all heard these tunes over and over, Hendrix is really whaling on these numbers and I would highly recommend this CD

I figured I'd pick this up as I already had a Barnes & Noble coupon and I'd only be out eleven dollars at worst. I dare say this may be the best live Hendrix I've heard yet. It's 1968, so the drugs are still fun at this point, and it's still early enough in the arc of Hendrix' career that he REALLY feels like he has something to prove. Indeed, this was the first festival at which he was the headliner. The versions of Hey Joe, Foxy Lady, and Fire are faster and ruder than on some of the later, more ponderous live recordings. And speaking of ponderous, even Tax Free is more than just a long, loose jam. Moreover, the sound IMHO is better than many other live Hendrix albums -- the drums and bass are clearly distinct entities, and indeed you can not just hear but FEEL the impact of the bass drum. Highly recommended.

Being familiar with the previous releases from the same period by the folks at Experience Hendrix and Dagger Records, I wasn't expecting to be as pleased as I am with this concert. This is the best officially released document from the spring 1968 tour available. The performance is better than the previously released Ottawa and Clark University shows and the sound -- while not perfect due to the usual equipment failures -- is exceptionally prepared and presented by Eddie Kramer.

The story goes that this Miami Pop performance was supposed to be filmed and used for a live album release, but although it was recorded and partially filmed, the project never came to fruition. Now all these years later we finally get to hear these well preserved tapes. Highly recommended for both die-hard and even curious fans.
