An excellent collection of the best funk and soul the just predated the disco era and helped shape it's parameters. When this came out in 2003 (i think), it was a very welcome addition to my collection. A MUST HAVE for any funk or soul lover. It is a collection of wikked late 60s and early 70s funk/soul. You may have heard some tracks already but some not.
Very gritty, excellent. The best tracks which are also old personal favourites of mine like "90% of me is you" by Gwen Mccrae, "you gotta be a man" by Helene Smith. In short its all good. If your into funk and soul you need this, believe!

My household devours rare soul voraciously, so when I stumbled upon this disc my interest was piqued. You really never know with these compilations, however, so I was wary of purchasing it at first. The customers that reviewed it seemed impressed, so I decided to purchase it along with the New Orleans funk disc. Both discs are on the British Soul Jazz label, and both are outstanding in there own ways. The Miami disc is a true summer mix. The songs are upbeat, danceable and smooth. A great CD to put on at a barbeque, just relaxing and enjoying life. My boyfriend was thoroughly impressed also - a must own for any soul fan. My personal favorite track is the silly and hilarious "Funky Cat" which heralds the joys of Cat Nip! Hip hop fans may also notice that KRS-One sampled the beginning of "Cramp your Style" by All the People in his 1989 song "I'm still #1" - and you know KRS doesn't sample anything but gems!

This is a superb compilation of late 1960s, early 1970s funk from Miami.

There are not drastic differances in funk from different American regions from the time, but there are small gradations. This collection represents Miami funk as extremely taunt, locked grooves. There is no nonsense--not a lot of flurishes or jazzy solos as you may have gotten in the bay area--and there are some latin spices, obviously from the Florida demographic

But that means little. This means more: excellent funk. Buy it.

This is a great compilation of funk-infused shoulda-been-golden oldies. Many of these songs are full of style, personality, and have lovable lyrics; highlights include "I get lifted," "funky cat," and the lovely "don't let the good times go bad." The only reason I didn't give this CD 5 stars is that I feel Soul Jazz Record's "New York Noise" compilation is a more captivating CD as a whole. Heck, just buy both!

Very impressive collection! This CD contains 17 tracks of quality soul and funk tunes. They may be "rare" and unknown to the average soul fun, but that doesn't mean they aren't good. Actually, they are great! Obviously, as evidenced by the music on this collection, there was a deep pool of soul talent in the Miami area during this period (1967-74), only some of whom (George McCrae, Gwen McCrae, Timmy Thomas) received nationwide acclaim. Those artists have some dynamite stuff on here, but the tracks by the lesser known artists also shine. The CD also contains a multi-page booklet with information about the Miami scene and biographical details about each artist. Excellent package.

Amazon lists the songs, but not the full roster of artists on the CD. This is who is performing on each track:

1. All The People
2. Helene Smith
3. George McCrae
4. James Knight and the Butlers
5. Gwen McCrae
6. Little Beaver
7. James Knight and the Butlers
8. Joey Gilmore
9. Helene Smith
10. James Knight and the Butlers
11. Timmy Thomas
12. The New Clarence Reid
13. Frank Williams and the Rocketeers
14. Della Humphrey
15. Frank Williams and the Rocketeers
16. Joey Gilmore
17. Little Beaver
