Mark Bernstein is an author and magazine writer, whose particular interests are American biography and social and technological history. Born in Chicago, he lived for 30 years near Dayton, Ohio, and moved to Washington, D.C. in 2004.
His work includes Grand Eccentrics [Orange Frazer Press, 1996], a group biography of such turn-of-the-century entrepreneurs as the Wright Brothers, Charles Kettering and others; World War II on the Air [with Alex Lubertozzi], [Sourcebooks, 2003] an account of the CBS radio coverage of the European Theatre; and separate books on the history and Civil.War heritage of New Bremen, Ohio, a small Midwestern town. He is currently at work on a biography of former Ohio Governor John Joyce Gilligan [Kent State Press, 2012].
He has written over 100 magazine articles, which have appeared in Smithsonian, Smithsonian Air & Space, American Heritage, American History and elsewhere. He was for many years a contributing editor to OHIO magazine, during which time it was twice named the nation's best regional publication and was a finalist for the National Magazine Award.
