Captivated my daughter's interest,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mia's Math Adventure: Just In Time! (CD-ROM)
My daughter is 8 years old and has adhd. She also hates math. Finding a way to make learning math fun for her is a challenge. This game captivated her interest unlike many other math games have. The graphics and story are excellent and she really had a good time and I don't think she really noticed she was doing math. The title had really put her off (contains the word MATH) and she didn't even want to play the game, but when we put it in, she was hooked on the spot. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was that it seemed very short. She finished the whole game in an afternoon. Despite it being short, I would still purchase this again so she can associate math with fun.

Superb graphics - my daughter loved it!,

I bought this game to help my 6 1/2 yr old get up to speed on math. She really hates math and is very impatient when I try to teach her. Anyway, she loved playing this game and asked for it every day until she completed it (at level 1). Days later, she is still talking about her favorite parts of the game. As to the learning of Math, it was not as much activity as I expected... however, the activities that are there are good quality. I did need to sit and help her the first time figure out what to do with each activity (The calculator was particularly hard to figure out how to get the results to display on the right hand side). I am still searching for math software that actually teaches math, not just queries kids on what they already know. Mia is more of the latter than the former, however, I would buy it again. It is a quality product with superb graphics that my daughter loves. I will be purchasing the other MIA products (Reading and Science).

This is a GREAT program. I use it for homeschooling my son. The graphics are gorgeous, and there are lots of math games to play-- you can either play them in the sequence of the story, or just pick and choose the math games from the "options" menu. The math itself is on the easy side, my six year old can play level two on most games and up to level four on others. I am a math phobe myself, though, and I wish I could have used this program as a child. So I would especially recommend it for parents with math-phobic kids, of any age!

This Is Not Boring!,
This review is from: Mia's Math Adventure: Just In Time! (CD-ROM)
My four-year-old daughter is almost through level one now without my help. She complains that it is gboringh but then keeps playing it for more than an hour after her complaint. I think her frustrations come from being unable to easily and quickly navigate around Miafs world. Sometimes when I come to help her because she is stuck, I see that she has clicked on everything too quickly while trying to find what she needs to do next, so the game cannot properly respond. So far the math in level one has been no trouble at all. The difficult part was the days of the week, which she is now learning thanks to this fun, educational program. I look forward to seeing level two soon! The Math Rabbit program we had before this was truly boring for her. This is a welcome addition to our CD-ROM case.

The pictures in this package are fascinating and my 7 year old daughter, who loves math, has played this exclusively for the last month. The math is just the right level to provide a doable challenge. It is rather short (or else we are missing something), but my daughter has played it over and over and enjoyed as much each time. It does have a level adjustment, but we have not used that yet. (Note: I like this better than Math Blaster 6-7).

Unfortunately, we were sucked in by other "good" reviews but when we got it, it was a disaster. First, it took forever, to install. Second, it will not install on the hard disk and requires loading the CD-ROM each time which means the adults must do it. Third, the user spends very little time doing math problems because the user must go through first a lengthy story which cannot be skipped each time a new game is loaded, and then must spend an inordinate amount of time taking a journey between phases of the math game trying to locate secret clues as to how to open the game. There are no solutions available and the user can get stuck . Next, the program can be adjusted for different levels of ability but when we set it at seven years, it went to third and fourth grade math. Maybe, in Japan but not here. Moreover, the program sometimes locks up. There are much better programs available which do not have these hang-ups and are a better buy.

I am homeschooling a second grader and bought this as a Christmas present. I hoped my daughter would have some fun with math problems as a counterpoint to our usual arithmetic worksheets. Because the word 'Math' was prominent in the title, I expected plenty of drill along with the fun and was sorely disappointed when it took 10 or 15 minutes of play to reach 1 minute's worth of extremely simple math problems. We completed level one of the game in about two hours with maybe 5 minutes of math altogether.
Granted, we started at level one, which was below my daughter's math ability. I hope the next level will have more and better math problems, but I fear but we may never find out as she just told me she doesn't want to play this expensive game again. We both agree that the graphics are well done, but my admittedly hyper-sensitive daughter didn't like the fire sequence and she found the 'bad guy' rats a bit scary. Worse, she was often frustrated when the mouse would not respond to directions, even when we did what Mia herself told us to do. Sometimes we had to click on an object multiple times before it worked the way it was supposed to. Other times, we'd move the cursor in the suggested direction (after clicking on Mia's face to get hints) and it would take several attempts to get her to move. All in all, neither my daughter nor I cannot recommend this game.

Good Game,

This game covers a wide range of difficulty. My 5 year old son plays on level 1, and he can answer the questions himself (he is very smart). My 7 year old son (also very bright) chooses difficulty level 2, and the questions are challenging for him. They have spent many hours playing Mia, and they have enjoyed it so much that we just purchased Mia Science and Mia Reading. Way to go Mia!

Base Premise: "Your House Burns Down and Your Family Loses Everything". You can't make this stuff up! Love to find a video game to help my daughter with Math, but one based on, literally, HER WORST NIGHTMARE might not quite make the grade. Perhaps one based on going to a combined funeral for her grandparents and pets might be even better. Guess the designers don't have kids. Oy!
