5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely rare find, worth owning (if you can find it) :-), June 17, 2006

This is definitely a worthwhile investment. If you like the 2 box office versions from 1939 and 1992, you will enjoy this version of the tale of 2 migrant workers in depression era California. In this version George (the smart one) is played by Robert (Baretta) Blake, and Lennie by Randy (brother of Dennis) Quaid best known for movies like "The Last Picture Show". It also includes talent like Mitch Ryan (Dark Shadows, Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Slim, Ted Neeley (Jesus Christ Superstar) as Curley and veterans Lew Ayres as Candy and Whitman Mayo (Grady, Sanford and Son) as Crooks. It basically plays like a remake of the 39 version with an extra scene not in the book at the beginning (in the book Lennie's aunt dies before the story takes place), but it is still enjoyable. By the way the running time on the disc like the tape says 150 minutes which is not true. It's closer to 125. Apparantly this copy was imported from Canada so that's why it's a rare find, but I bought it at a used store in New Jersey and it plays great. So if you have 2 hours and 5 minutes to kill, get a copy while it lasts. In fact take about 6 hours and watch all 3, and compare and contrast them. You will find differences, yes, but trust me you will enjoy all 3 interpretations of this wonderful work of John Steinbeck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the three, April 1, 2010

Having been cast in the role of "George", in a stage production of "Of Mice and Men", I decided to do some research, by re-reading the Steinbeck novel and viewing the three movies, made from the story. In my opinion, overall, this is the best of the three. All of them had good production elements, and direction, but if you are looking for balanced acting, thoughout the movie, this tops the list. My favorite George portrayal, is by Gary Senise, of the 92 version. He was a natural in the role. Robert Blake was a close second, as I liked how his own personality was part of the mix. Burgess Meredith, an actor with a great body of work, in his lifetime, unfortunately, overacted, in the original, 1939 version. I liked the acting of both Lon Chaney Jr.(1939) and Randy Quaid (1981), in their roles of Lenny. They both shined in their individual portrayals. John Malkovich was absolutely dead wrong, in his treatment of the character, from 1992. Why didn't an acting coach tell him that there is a HUGE difference between playing a grown man, who has a mind of an eight year old boy, and just playing an eight year old boy?
I am hoping that this 1981 version, on DVD, will be re-released soon, as who can afford some of the used price gouging?

5.0 out of 5 stars Of Mice and Men( with Robert Blakely), May 11, 2009
This review is from: Of Mice and Men [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a superior version of the film, Of Mice and Men. It is true to the novel on which it is based, and Randy Quaid is very believable in his portrayal of Lennie. Robert Blake also does an outstanding job with his character, George. He projects just the right balance of feelings toward Lennie: compassion, at his inability to fend for himself and get along in the world, even though he truly tries his hardest; a fatherly amusement, as Lennie imitates many things that George does; pride in Lennie`s strength and obedience to him; but, also, resentment, that he must limit his life and mold it around his responsibility to Lennie, despite the fact that he has taken on this responsibility voluntarily. I found all the actors in this version of the film to be perfect for their roles and much as I had imagined them when I read the novel.
