A remarkable individual,

This review is from: Michael Bohnen at the Metropolitan Opera (Audio CD)
The most interesting thing about this CD issue is the brief biography in the liner notes. A truly remarkable polymath if that's quite the right adjective? Perhaps more a doer than a thinker but a highly intelligent artist. I had never heard him before buying this - I just wanted to know how he sounded I supppose. I was curious. The voice is large, well produced and accurate. It doesn't appeal as a voice to me. It lacks a certain sonority that I have come to enjoy in warmer, fuller voices. Perhaps I also miss some vocal light and shade. Compare his Si Puo from Pagliacci with Tibbett's and you might see what I mean. Of course, I wasn't expecting Tibbett but the contrast is a little steep. I liked the Wagner excerpts the best, but once again I missed some tonal warmth, especially from his Wolfram.
Singers are a very individual taste, are they not?
